We Need Alone Time

Just a little time to ourselves!

We Need Alone Time
Samantha Scherer

When you are young, you depend on a lot of people. You depend on your parents and other adults around you. They help you grow up. You do not always want to be alone or when you are very young, you definitely cannot be alone. And of course, as you get older you become less dependent on others and start fending for yourself. Obviously you still want people around you. But it is also important that you get time to yourself.

I found as I got older that I wanted to be alone more. I find myself to be pretty independent but I do enjoy the company of others. I do not need to enjoy everyone's company at every waking minute of the day. I believe it is OK to feel that way. I actually believe that we all need alone time, even just some time to ourselves once a day is a good thing.

So the question is why? Why do we need alone time? I do not know about you but I actually get tired of being around people for too long (sorry everyone). Even 20 minutes to just sit by myself is like the equivalent of heaven. Sometimes I just want to sit there and listen to music or watch some T.V.

I think it is important to give yourself some time to be alone. Some people do not like being alone all the time but I think everyone should try it. I find that it just allows you to unwind and you do not have to think about anything. Or you may find that alone time is when you can gather your thoughts and you do not have any noise or distractions. Just you and your own thoughts. Sounds nice to me!

I can think of one time in particular that you may need some alone time. I find that I really want alone time when I am on vacation. Do not get me wrong, I love socializing and hanging out with my family or friends but I sometimes just want to tune everyone out (sorry again). And I think that is OK to want. On vacation, you travel with a select amount of people to a place with a bunch of strangers. So all you really know is the people you are with. I think that it is easy to get tired of the people you are with and you just want to be by yourself for a little while. Nothing is wrong with that and people should not take that personally. It probably happens for a lot of us. It is probably a good thing to want to relax and get away from others.

So my advice to all of you is that after reading this, you should take some time out of each day to just relax by yourself. You may find that it is nice to be alone for a little while. It is just you and you can do whatever you want!

too tired to care

We've all been there. From move-in day to the first finals week in college, your first term is an adventure from start to finish. In honor of college decisions coming out recently, I want to recap some of the most common experiences college freshmen experience.

1. The awkward hellos on move-in day.

You're moving your stuff onto your floor, and you will encounter people you don't know yet in the hallway. They live on your floor, so you'll awkwardly smile and maybe introduce yourself. As you walk away, you will wonder if they will ever speak to you again, but don't worry, there's a good chance that you will make some great friends on your floor!

We all freak out when things don't go exactly as planned or when our expectations are unmet. As time goes on, we realize that the uncertainty of college is what makes it great. Dear High School Friend Group,

My sweet angels, where would I be without you guys. We all grew up together because we either met in middle school or high school and watched each other grow up and get "old." We got to go to prom together and then graduate together. Then watched each other as we continued our lives in college, joining sororities and meeting people who will impact our lives forever. It all has happened so fast.

Oh college, we can’t live with you, but we can’t live without you. It’s a love/hate relationship, really. College is an experience that no one can ever prepare you for, and maybe that’s a good thing. You never really expect any of the things that college encompasses until you are there. College is fun, but don’t have too much fun. C’s get degrees, but they don’t get you into graduate school.
