We Must Bring Back Grammar!

Spelling is vital to showing intelligence.

Where in the world did grammar go?

We’ve all seen it. That poorly written blog or article that makes you want to cringe even looking at it. Those of us that pride ourselves on the proper use of grammar that is. Every time I see an article or blog with grammar errors that are obvious, I die a little inside. It’s as though poor grammar has become the norm in society to pander to the lazy. It’s as though society as accepted poor grammar and the rest of us have to accept it. Life now consists of studying spelling in school just to take a texting bee on Fridays.

This is the norm at the local school in the district I live in. Spelling is not nearly as important to teachers as abbreviations like LOL, WYD, and BRB. Which we all know means laugh out loud, what you doing, and be right back. If it isn’t that, then it’s the posts on Facebook and other social media sites like Twitter and Instagram, where people misspell their for there and the like. It is really quite irritating. Every time I see this on a post, I don’t even bother with reading the rest. I just scroll on.

I usually pass on reading poorly written articles. The errors either indicate that the author or the editor was not paying attention. Grammar is something that attention needs paying to. Grammar shows intelligence and is the best way to convey a message. Reading something that is poorly written can be a distraction form the message the author was trying to convey. Also, the meaning of that message can be confused if there are spelling errors. Some might mistake it as a symbol or theme in the writing that just isn’t there.

I have a habit, for the most part, in spelling out all the words I use when I write a message or post something on social media. It is just ingrained in me from teachers that taught proper spelling habits when I was in school. As an English major, it just isn’t in me to abbreviate everything. I would rather show my intelligence, not hide it. I think the internet has taken intelligence from people and made it so that people have another convenience at their fingertips. I personally love leafing through books looking for the information I need. Yes, having information at my fingertips online is nice, but nothing beats a book. A well-written article is even better.

We can bring back grammar. It doesn’t have to die the sad and lonely death it is now. People need to pay more attention to their spelling and show their intelligence so that when they write, or speak, they are taken seriously and there is no misunderstanding for the messages they are trying to convey. Grammar is important.

Breathe life back into it.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
