We Don't Need Another 13 Reasons Why

Who told Netflix we did?

As you may know by now, Netflix will be releasing the second season of the highly talked about, somewhat divisive series, 13 Reasons Why. Chances are you heard about the show last year, since people talked about it everywhere, but in case you don't know what it is, here's a quick breakdown.

The series starts with the tragic suicide of high school student, Hannah Baker. Hannah, before she died, made a series of tapes where she gave the 13 reasons why she decided to kill herself, each tape laying blame to someone or something that happened in her life. She then mailed them to be passe around to each person on the tapes, like some twisted chain mail, so they could all know how they played a hand in her death. She also gave an extra copy of the tapes to someone she trusted, in case someone decides to break the chain, in which this person would than blast her story through the speaker of the school. The series itself focuses on Clay, a friend of Hannah's who had a crush on her, and vice versa, and his adventures of blame and guilt and trying to understand why Hannah died and why he was on the tapes. When the series ended, it ended with Clay finishing the tapes and all the backlash everyone else on the tapes faced for, in some cases, either making a mistake or being a dumb teenager, with an actual horrendous crime sprinkled in.

That's where season one ended. Really, that's where the whole series should have ended. Clay finished the tapes. He passed them along. He understands why Hannah died and how he quite frankly did not belong on those tapes. This is essentially where the book the series is based on ended as well. There is no reason to continue the story. At least not with a whole other season.

I get it, we want to know if Bryce will be arrested, or if Alex will live after shooting himself, or where Justin will land, or what Jessica is going to do coming to terms with what happened to her, or why Tyler was looking at all those guns. There are bits of stories still there. But they couldn't be wrapped up with a ninety minute special? Isn't that similar to what Sense8 did? Or we could have left it at that, an ominous ending. Hey, I could even go with a four part, a la Gilmore Girls style thing, where the series uses that to neatly wrap up the questions they left in the finale, and that's it.

But with a whole second season, they're not just going to wrap up those story lines. There's going to be more plot points, more questions, maybe another cliffhanger to milk the premise into a third season. How long until we, as viewers, get tired of it though? Will we be on season 6 of 13 reasons why before we stop tweeting about it? Or maybe Netflix will see the backlash they already have with this season and think two is enough. I'm not sure.

What I am sure of, is I'm not going to be watching how they drag out a story they already told last year.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
