Am I the only one who feels like their brain has received so much information over the past week that they can no longer form a coherent thought?
It's like Election Day came in and completely shit on all of us. In the aftermath, we were completely in shock and uncomprehending. I woke up Wednesday sick to my stomach and unable to move out of fear of actually becoming sick. Thursday I felt less repulsed and more angry. Friday I started to accept democracy, but still had a ton of pent up anger toward Donald Trump. On Saturday, media outlets were going crazy over Trump's sudden change of heart concerning Obamacare. Finally, Sunday started off well with Trump declaring he was okay with the Supreme Court's decision on gay marriage, and ended with him appointing an alt-right, white supremacist as his chief strategist. I mean…what??
Honestly, I don't think Trump expected to win. All of a sudden, he's become this incredibly humble guy who's honored to have won and thinks President Obama is a wonderful guy that he will most definitely seek council from in the future. Again…WHAT? Is this the same guy who questioned Obama's birth certificate for years on end?
I mean, in reality, I expected him to back out of some of his campaign promises, but it hasn't even been a week yet. I expected him to hold out much longer than that.
I think over the next two months we're going to see Trump slowly separate from the Republican platform and settle himself smack dab in the middle of both parties. The good thing about Trump for us liberals is he is way too concerned about what people think of him. He will distance himself as far away as he can from any conservative stances he thinks will give him a negative reputation. We may have less to fear than we originally expected.
While the future is uncertain, the environment his campaign has created is undeniably unacceptable. Reports of harassment and discrimination have popped up all across the country. Minority races, ethnicities and religions are suffering the consequences of Trump's campaign rhetoric.
I, myself, witnessed a truly disgusting, sexist, racist and homophobic conversation take place in the dorm room across the hall from mine. These guys were so loud their voices carried down the hallway. Anyone walking by could have heard them and been the subject of their speech. My roommate and I, two women, stood out in the hallway and listened to them laugh as they said, "I don't care, I'll just grab them by the p---y."
Knowing that the guys living across the hall from me accept and use this kind of language is not comforting, nor does it make me feel safe in the place I live. This is the environment Trump has created, and he needs to denounce it before it becomes the norm. So far, I've been happy to see he has spoken out a few times on this issue because I refuse to accept this kind of America.
Trump may be extremely malleable to the will of whoever offers him the best image, but he has chosen to surround himself with some pretty terrifying individuals. With Mike Pence as his Vice President and a white supremacist as his chief strategist, the fight to protect minorities is far from over. But we all knew that the moment Trump starting gaining support during the primaries.
If you are unhappy with the results of the election, as the majority of us are (hello, popular vote), I encourage you to get involved. Be proactive. There is a clear disconnect within our country that we needed to address no matter who won the presidency. Now that everyone's eyes have been fully opened, we know the problems we need to address. Let's get to work.
