On Monday, January 23, 2017, Trump signed a bill that will restrict funding to women's health organizations by reinstating a Reagan-era policy that prevents U.S. aid from funding any non-governmental organizations that provide or advise on abortions. This is overturning a decision President Obama made in 2009 just three days after taking office, the bill is known as “Global Gag Rule”.“This group just made it more difficult for women to get access to healthcare worldwide,” wrote California’s Democratic Senator Kamala Harris .With this bill being signed, it poses a problem. This problem being women seeking out unsafe abortions. Women could possibly die if unsafe abortions are happening.
On inauguration weekend The March On Washington happened. This march was huge and served for many purposes and beliefs. The march aimed to "send a bold message to our new administration on their first day in office, and to the world that women's rights are human rights," "This effort is not anti-Trump," co-founder Tamika Mallory said. "This is pro-women. This is a continuation of a struggle women have been dealing with for a very long time. In this moment, we are connecting and being as loud as possible." Women marched for abortion, birth control, women's rights and other causes including immigration reform, health care reform, protection of the natural environment, LGBTQ rights, racial justice, freedom of religion, and workers' rights. Over 5 million people worldwide marched along with 1 million people in Washington. 673 marches took place worldwide, including 29 in Canada and 20 in Mexico. Protests occurred on all seven continents; it has been catching the attention of many. In Washington D.C. alone, the protests were the largest political demonstrations since the anti–Vietnam War protests in the 1960s and 1970s. The homepage for the march has created 10 actions/100 days to keep up momentum, but something tells me the momentum is going nowhere. Writing a postcard to your senator is the first action.
This march gained monumental importance because of the many women that believe they have complete say in what they do with their bodies and that there should be no law saying what can and cannot happen.
People also fear that with the ACA being repealed they could die, the ACA is allowing them to have the medicine they need. The ACA is also providing birth control for those who cannot afford it and so is Planned Parenthood but that's sadly being defunded. With these being defunded it is also posing a huge risk. Some women can't afford birth control or don't have insurance, obviously without birth control, people are probably going to have unwanted pregnancies. If they can't afford birth control they probably won't be able to afford abortions or adoption lawyers. If they can't afford these things, it could end up leading them to an unsafe abortion or just abandoning these babies. Yes, sex is a huge deal but you have to realize it may not always be consensual. Rape is a real thing, and Trump wants you to know that if you are in the military you should expect it.
Men and women are equal, men can NOT tell me what I can and cannot do with my body. Men are NOT superior.
