Be Who You Are

"We are what we believe we are." -C.S. Lewis

I am insanely jealous.

I overreact.

I question every possible thing.

I never think I’m worthy of anyone.

I am annoying.

I am over emotional.

I care about people too much.

I feel the need to take care of people.

All of these things are seen as negative aspects of one’s personality. But whoever said that they are? Sure we as human beings have been told some of these things, but for the majority of our lives here on this earth it is us who say these things. We say these things to ourselves. We put ourselves down in order to change who we are because we feel that these are negatives. But why do we?

Why do we think we need to change these things that make us who we are? Typically we as humans change these things for another person. There is another person that we think mean so much to us and our being that we think we need to change ourselves. We don’t. We shouldn’t have to change in order for someone to like us. If they don’t like us for who we are and what we believe are “negatives” than they don’t deserve to see anything that we consider a positive.

There are also going to be people who tell you not to change who you are and those are the people you need to keep in your life. They are the people who will not see your “negatives” as negatives but as things that make you, you.

So if we also have these amazing people who don’t make us change for them, then why do we pick out the negatives? Why don’t we amplify the positives? There are so many positives in us as people that we burrow away and pretend that we don’t have. Broadcast them. Who cares what other people think because you will attract those who also share those positives.

Remember that some of the things you consider to be negatives are more than likely positives.

I care a lot about people.

I like to take care of people.

I love to write.

I am a very curious person.

I want to help people.

I love to sing.

I try to fix things, no matter how bad.

Take time out of your day today and think about your positives. Think about what makes you, you. Don’t let other people think you need to change things. Flip what you think are negatives into positives. Find what you love and who loves you for you. Don’t bother with those you feel you need to change for because they are not worth your time.

You are amazing just by being you. You are a wonderful human who may have negatives, but look past these and find the other things you think are wonderful.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
