We Are Not Superheroes

...And That's Ok

One of the biggest comeback fads of our culture today is the superhero craze. When my dad was growing up, comic books telling the adventures of Superman, Batman, and The Avengers were in style. Superheroes have been making a comeback in our movie and TV industry. With The Avengers, Batman, and Superman movies on the big screen and Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl on TV, we are seeing a trend. If you want to make it big in the entertainment industry, make it all about superheroes.

I love the superhero world. I have unashamedly binge watched Arrow and The Flash. Even when I was a kid, The Incredibles was my favorite Disney movie.

What makes superheroes such a compelling theme?

Superheroes fight the battles we want to fight and win.

As I binge watch superhero shows and movies, I start to want to be a superhero. I want to have super-human strength, I want to be the fastest girl in the world, I want to fly. The problem is, this will never happen. We are not superheroes.

If I stood on train tracks and put my hands up to stop a runaway train, the train would not stop. I would get flatten and die immediately. If I jumped in the air, I would still succumb to the force of gravity.

If we tried to save the world from all of the daily disasters we face, we would fail. But, we want to save the world. We want to be the person someone calls when they need help, the person who can easily solve a problem, and we want to be the person who is above and beyond great. As I create this mindset in my head, I realize I am setting myself up for failure. I try to be perfect and become discouraged when I am not able to meet my own expectations.

There will be days where I will feel like the world is crashing around me. There will be days where I will be exhausted and unable to help anyone. There will be days when I will not know what to do.

The good news is, I do not have to save the world because the world has already been saved.

God humbled himself, the most powerful in the world, as Jesus Christ who died for our sins. He already saved the world. We are free to fail.

God does not expect us to be perfect, He knows there will be days when we fail. When we fall, He gives us strength to get back up again. He continues to save us on the days when we cannot save ourselves.

Go out into the world and save it to the best you can, but know in the end, someone far greater than you has already saved the world.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
