We Are Not "Sorority Sluts"

Last week, a man called 'Brother Dean' was arrested at the University of Arizona for kicking a sorority girl while he was 'preaching' on campus. Honestly, him getting arrested may have been the best thing to happen at the U of A because he spread propaganda and hate towards different groups on campus, especially Greek life. 'Brother Dean' would bring signs to the campus stating hateful things including "Sorority Girls Are Whores" and "You Deserve Rape", both being untrue and disturbing statements. These kinds of sayings are just a few of the hateful things said about Greek life, especially sororities. Greek life is looked down upon by society and the rumors that are spread about it are simply not true. As a member of a Greek organization, I can assure you that not all of the rumors and stereotypes about sorority women are true. People often refer to sorority women as "Bimbos" or "Brainless Sluts" assuming we lack intelligence and are all party girls. Personally, some of the smartest people I know are girls in my house or women that have come from a Greek organization. Inspirational women such as Tory Burch (Kappa Alpha Theta), Kate Spade (Kappa Kappa Gamma), and even Dr. Condeleezza Rice who served as the 66th United States Secretary of State (Alpha Chi Omega) were in sororities. Greek life is commonly criticized by individuals who have never been apart of a Greek organization. They make untrue assumptions about the organizations when they don't know what being a member of a sorority or fraternity actually means. They assume that we "buy our friends" when in reality, we pay to be apart of an organization that gives back to the community through philanthropy and gets involved on campuses nationwide. So what if your friends all happen to be in your house? You spend so much time at the house eating meals and participating in events that it'd be sad if you didn't have friends in the house. For me, being a part of Greek life gave me a home away from home, somewhere I could go and be surrounded by people who understand me. At any hour of the day, I could go to the house and one of my sisters would be there to talk. What people don't understand about Greek life is that being a part of a Greek organization does not make us women "whores" or make any member in a sorority or fraternity "dumb", instead it allows us to be a part of a community that has the power to make a difference in the lives of many through community service and involvement. Sororities were founded on the aspects of sisterhood, values and ethics, high academic standards and social responsibility. So before you say something negative about Greek life, get your facts straight.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Cambio

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
