We're Adults?

When did that happen? How do we make it stop?

We're Adults?

Growing up is weird. One day we are in high school, living with our parents and eating them out of house and home and the next day, we are expected to go out into the world and support ourselves. In one day we go from a dependent to an independent. We go from minors to adults in the blink of an eye. No one really prepares us for what life is like - no one tells us how to pay bills or do that credit score thing. We are just supposed to figure it out by ourselves and hope we don't accidentally kill ourselves in the process. Weird, right? Here are some adult things and thoughts that run through all of our heads when we are trying to figure out how to do them.

Working

"Are you sure I have to wake up that early?"

"I don't think I can deal with another annoying customer."

"Wait...I have to be nice to EVERYONE?"

"Ugh, my paycheck so wasn't what I wanted it to be."

"I just got paid yesterday, how do I only have $3?"

"I can't believe I'm only making minimum wage."

"I don't get paid enough for this."

Money

"Okay, I am only running in to buy one thing."

"Yeah, I just spend $100 that I didn't need to."

"I am hungry. Let's order pizza."

"Rent or food money?"

"What the hell is a credit score and how do I make it go up??"

"Sorry, I can't go out. I have $-4 in my bank account."

Living Alone

"I definitely don't think I have enough for rent this month."

"Will my landlord fix that?"

"Omg who is going to kill that spider??"

"Do you mean my mom isn't going to come cook dinner tonight? Or...ever?"

"Do I have to fix that? Maybe it will take care of itself..."

"I don't really have to call the plummer, right?"

"Wait, I have to clean all of this by myself?"

"Can someone please remind me to eat three square meals a day?"

"Mom??"

Cleaning & Cooking

"Crap, there are clothes all over my room. Who is going to pick that up?"

"Oh...right, I have to pick all of that up."

"Ugh, those dishes are disgusting."

"How long can I wear these clothes until I have to wash them?"

"I can wait until my parents visit to do laundry."

"Who knew I was going to miss mom's cooking this much."

"I've eaten Ramen every day for three weeks straight."

Finding Balance

"School, work, or friends?"

"Seriously, I don't get any time to relax?"

" Sleep or homework?"

"Sorry, I can't hang out tonight. I have to work."

"Yeah, I wish I could make that thing but I'm busy."

"I need at least two weeks notice to do anything fun."

"I hate my being a grown up."

The only good news is...none of us really know what the hell we're doing.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
