5 Ways To Stay Awake For Finals Week

It’s a never-ending cycle of sleep deprivation.

It’s been a difficult past two weeks. With finals approaching like an incoming train about to thunder into our lives, the next few weeks will, believe it or not, become increasingly difficult. The opportunity to sleep will be few and far between, and all-nighters will become the norm. Here are some tips that can be used to stay awake for an all-nighter (only if you really, REALLY have to):

1. Food, food, food!!

I know, it’s almost beach week, and the weeks of beach bod training you’ve been doing will surely go up in flames with the onslaught of greasy, late night snacks you’ll be consuming during finals week. But it doesn’t have to be this way! Start piling up on healthy snacks, such as nuts or protein bars, so you aren’t tempted to go to Cookout every night of finals. Just don’t overeat and put yourself in a food coma.

2. Chew gum

Chewing gum will increase alertness and help you stay awake. The constant motion of chewing with your jaw will stimulate blood flow into the head, which will help you stay awake.

3. Take a walk

Pretty self-explanatory, but if you take a break every so often and take a walk around to clear your head a bit, this will do wonders. A quick 10 minutes or walking will boost your energy and vigor, and get you back on track with your work.

4. 1-2 minute naps

This I swear by. Whenever it’s 3 a.m. in the morning, and I find myself continuously nodding off, I allow myself to drift off for a minute or two before getting right back up. Set an alarm for one or two minutes, and once you doze off and wake up with the alarm, it’ll feel like you just took a 30-minute nap.

5. Just sleep

Just do it. You’re exhausted, and you’re not retaining any of the textbook reading you’ve done for the past hour. It’s time to call it a night. It may be frustrating having to give in the exhaustion, but grabbing a good night sleep and waking up refreshed will make you much more productive the next day.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
