It is hard to believe that spring break is already here. Many students have a tradition of planning a trip during their spring break, eager to soak up some sun on the beach and party for seven days straight. While that sort of carefree time would be splendid, not everyone has the opportunity to get out of town and go on an actual vacation. Whether you are obligated to work, have too many deadlines, or your bank account simply can’t support the expenses of traveling…that doesn’t mean that you can’t make the most of your time off. Having the opportunity to spend some time for yourself (that’s longer than the normal weekend) should be celebrated--relaxation and memorable times do not have to entail an extravagant trip.

So, here’s to the stay-at-home spring breakers. If you are stuck trying to figure out how to spend your time without twiddling your thumbs, here are a few suggestions:

1. Go hiking

Go off the grid for a while. There is nothing like the beauty and peace that may be found out in nature.

2. Have a picnic

Grab some lunch and eat outside. Change up your normal routine of eating your meals on the couch and watching TV!

3. Make a Tasty recipe

We’ve all seen those cooking tutorials with delicious, easy-to-make recipes. Ditch the freezer meals, and get in touch with your inner chef.

4. Nap

…and don’t feel guilty about it. Good sleep is hard to come by, so take the opportunity while you can to refresh.

5. Meditate

Close your eyes and breathe. Clear your head of any troubles or frustration, and focus on what you can do to improve your inner self.

6. Take a social media break

Social media makes us feel connected, but it is easy to become disconnected from physical reality. Take some time to absorb what is going on around you.

7. Read a book

There is nothing like getting lost in a good book. Watching TV and movies have become the norm, but there is something so much more personal and immersive about experiencing a great story through reading.

8. Start a blog

Get your thoughts out there. It can be so refreshing to take the time to convey your ideas and emotions through writing.

9. Craft

Create some art or pick a Pinterest DIY project. When you have your finished project, you can proudly think, “Wow, I made this.”

10. Pamper yourself

Treat yourself. Light some candles, take a long bath, and just relax. Like sleep, true relaxation can be hard to come by. You deserve a break and a little extra TLC.

11. Start a new series

I’m sure you have heard something along the lines of, “You have never watched ____?! You’re kidding!” Try out a new show on Hulu or Netflix, or start a noteworthy movie or television series.

12. Build a new playlist

Gather a fresh array of music--pick a theme and add your favorite songs, or listen to something you have never heard before.

13. Play with animals

…because what could be more heartwarming than playing with puppies and kittens? Visit your local animal shelter, and maybe even consider adopting!

14. Play a game

Whether you are in to sports, video games, board or card games… take a break from the seriousness with a fun challenge.

15. Take a long walk

Take a stroll through a park or down a slow-traffic road. Walking outside can be a great way to clear your head while getting exercise and a nice view.

16. Go on a bike ride

If you have a bicycle handy and would rather gain some speed instead of taking a walk, take a ride down a long path or road.

17. Visit old friends

When possible, it can be enjoyable to get together with some old pals and catch up on what you have missed. Reminisce on old memories and the times you had together that were priceless.

18. Plan a date

It doesn’t have to be with your significant other or a potential love interest--have a day or night out with your best friends, mom, siblings, or whoever you could have a great time with.

19. Try a new restaurant

If you are a lover of food like me, trying a new restaurant is always exciting and will (hopefully) hit the spot. It may be tempting to order from your favorite go-to restaurant again, but you don’t know what you could be missing!

20. Go someplace new in your area

You never know what interesting places are close by that you have yet to discover. Explore your local tourist areas--you may find many options that are free of charge!

21. Take pictures

It is always special to have memories captured in a photo. Have a photoshoot for yourself or with friends, or go out and take awesome pictures of nature or scenery.

22. Plant and grow

Start a garden, plant some flowers, or pot a new succulent. Planting can be more therapeutic than one would expect, and it is genuinely gratifying to watch your plant blossom and grow.

23. Watch amusing videos

Find a channel that interests you--scroll through YouTube, Vimeo, TED Talks, etc. There is so much more to discover than what is on Netflix, Hulu, or your cable channels.

24. Read captivating articles

Like watching videos, reading through articles that interest you can be very informational and entertaining. There are many platforms to choose from when searching interesting articles...like the Odyssey Online!

Whatever you choose to do during your spring break (or at any point in time where you have some moments to spare), always remember to look at the bright side. Try to find some time to do something that you enjoy--your breaks are well deserved and should be taken advantage of.

Have a great staycation!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
