I've seen a lot of negative responses to the reusable straw movement that shame those who have purchased reusable straws on the basis that they are not actually environmentally conscious since the majority of the plastic in the oceans is a result of large corporations, not individuals. Of course, there is truth to that, and corporations need to do better to help save the environment. However, I believe these critics are missing the point. Buying one reusable straw may not drastically affect the overall amount of waste and plastic in the ocean, but the plastic straw movement focuses on reevaluating your personal shortcomings when it comes to being eco-friendly and taking small steps to decrease your personal waste. With that being said, here is a list of some other small changes you can make to your everyday routine that are good for the environment!

Bamboo toothbrushes are widely available and inexpensive, and they're much better for the environment than plastic toothbrushes. Try to use a reusable water bottle and/or reusable cups everywhere you go instead of wasting plastic through using disposable plastic water bottles and plastic cups for coffee. Purchase some reusable bags to use when you go shopping in order to reduce the amount of paper and plastic bags you use to carry groceries and other necessities. There are even reusable plastic sandwich bags that can be purchased to reduce plastic use and save you some money!

Of course being vegan or vegetarian is great for the environment, but there are other small ways to change your diet that can help save the Earth! Cutting out red meat or reducing your red meat consumption is a great small step. Purchasing locally grown food helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. Additionally, using oat milk instead of regular milk or milk alternatives helps reduce emissions and water usage.

You may have heard of these common tips before, but these can save you money and help the environment. Don't leave the water running while you are brushing your teeth and try to shorten your showers if possible. Only run the washing machine or dishwasher for full loads in order to waste less water. Make sure to turn off lights when you leave the room and don't leave chargers plugged into the wall when they are not being used. Also, taking public transportation, biking, or walking short distances that you normally drive are great ways to make your carbon footprint smaller!
Don’t forget about activism!

At the end of the day, corporations are also responsible for the majority of the environmental issues we face today. Hold them accountable! Advocate on behalf of laws and political candidates that will protect our environment. Get out and vote in favor of green legislation in order to protect our planet!
