Ways To Use Your Time During Winter Study

Winter Study at Williams is a time where students often do not know what to do with themselves. We are required to do one thing during the month of January, whether it be taking one of the unusual courses offered, or an off-campus adventure is a student’s personal choice. Only two weeks in, I have already gotten a chance to see the stigma of Williams students who are constantly working break down. The last two weeks I have discovered ten of my favorite things to do with so much extra time on my hands. Hope this helps my fellow Williams students and others who are back on campus early!

1. Sleep

As college students, sleep is very important for our health, but is something we do not have the opportunity to get enough of. Use this extra time as a break and get a sufficient amount of sleep! Sleeping is the perfect way to rest and prepare for Spring Semester.

2. Exercise

Without a busy schedule, it is often hard to stay active. Exercising is the perfect way to stay active and take care of your body during winter study. It is nice to use the extra time to find new ways to exercise and really figure out what works for you.

3. Explore the Area Surrounding Campus

It is easy to feel like you are familiar with your college campus but there is always more to discover. Find new places to hang out around campus and off campus. Use extra time to get to know the community your college is in.

4. Eat Out

Eat off campus now that you have the time to actually eat a meal that is not on the go. Take advantage of the fact that you have the choice of eating campus food! This is also a great opportunity to find new restaurants around campus.

5. Ice Skating

Ice Skating is the perfect activity to do in the winter because you can actually enjoy being in a cold. This is a fun pass time if you are looking for something active to do with your friends.

6. Winter Sports/ Jiminy Peak

Skiing and Snowboarding are also great ways to enjoy the cold during the winter. This is especially a great pastime at Williams where our campus is in the Berkshires and we have easy access to Jiminy Peak.

7. Watch Something New

Find a new television show or movie to watch alone or even with your friends! This is a great time to support the preforming arts on campus and see local performances.

8. Meet New People

Go to social events! Take advantage of all the times you decided to stay in to study during fall semester and meet new people. Have lunch with someone new.

9. Get involved in something New on Campus

Join a new student group that you did not have time for fall semester.

10. Plan Ahead for Spring Semester

Use this month to think about the classes you will be taking in the spring. Prepare yourself physically and mentally so that you are ready to jump right into next semester feeling fresh.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
