7 Tips for Spring Break on a Budget

When spring break rolls around, we often celebrate our time off by traveling which is expensive. There are various ways to have a fun spring break that are more affordable. Even if you don't have a lot of extra cash you don't have to live under a rock. You might find something you want to try here.

1. Bring your Student I.D.

When we think of hanging out with fellow friends on spring break, we often go to the movies, but that can put a hole in our pocket if we're not careful. Bring your student I.D. to the movies and your friends' I.D.s too for discounts. While you are at it, buy some snacks at other places and sneak it in because theatre prices are crazy. Going to the movies with a friend or partner can be an even cheaper experience if you strategize and eat beforehand so you aren't craving all of those high priced snacks. Many places will give you a discount as a student, so always remember to flash that plastic.

2. Grab a Snack from home

Before going out, eat a meal so you don't get crazy and find yourself in a convenience store buying tons of snacks. Whether your shopping, going to the movie or just hanging out with friends, eating out or grabbing fast food on the go can really drain your budget. Bonus, eating at home is more healthy too!

3. Use the Internet

This one should be natural for you, since you are reading this online right now. When traveling is not an option, we can go on the internet to enjoy an experience in the virtual world. There are places that I've never been to, but I am still able to observe the different cultures through footage or sights using google maps and photos from nature photographers. Until you save up, graduate and go out into the real world with a real job that pays you to travel, you can dream cheaply for the meantime.

4. Enjoy Video Games

Now, triple A blockbuster games aren't cheap these days. They will cost you $60-$70, but you can spend time playing classic old games or you can buy mobile games on your phone to pass the time. Don't get seduced too much by the in-game app purchases though; you may end up with a $1000 bill while having too much fun. A fun low tech twist on this is to invite friends over for board games as well.

5. Binge Netflix

For only $8 dollars a month, you can have access to thousands of titles to pick from. Since most people don't have the cash to travel to another country, you can pick some foreign movies to watch in the mean time or cool documentaries about places you will visit when you make it big.

6. Read a Book

Yeah, I just said that. Read a book. You can exercise your mind. Try spending time reading about fantasy dragons and wizardry schools. While your friends travel over break, you can envision being in a land that doesn't even exist. Taking a trip this way is completely free since the library offers anything you could want to read.

7. Visit a Local Beach

Without the traveling expenses to go to popular beaches located in Florida or California, go to a local beach. This staycation is a great way to experience spring break small scale. Work on your tan, enjoy the spring weather and spend a fraction of what everyone else is paying.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

It's not all morning coffees and singing along to the radio.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.
