It's that time of the year again! You basically live in the library, drink excessive amounts of caffeine, spend endless hours into the night studying, and try your best to avoid watching Netflix. Finals season is upon us! Here are some ways to study and keep sane during this stressful time of the year.
1. Pace yourself.
Space out your studying. Cramming is ineffective and will only stay in your short term memory. Create a study schedule and follow it. Study in chunks by separating a subject by chapters. Don’t forget to prioritize!
2. Color code.
If it helps you study, use colors to stay organized! Using colored pencils, pens, and highlighters can be advantageous. Colored flashcards come in handy too.
3. Use flashcards.
For some people, flashcards can be extremely useful. It’s helpful to use physical flashcards, but there are also online options like Quizlet.
4. Make lists.
Make a list at the beginning of each day full of realistic tasks you aim to accomplish and get them done.
5. Eat healthily.
Go grocery shopping and pick up some healthy snacks. Don't forget to always carry a water bottle with you to stay hydrated and pick up a couple energy drinks or grab a coffee if you need one.
6. Be organized.
Clean your room and aim to have a clean desk. You should reorganize your notebooks, notes, and calendar as well if needed.
7. Find your ideal study environment.
Get out of your dorm and take a trip to the library, coffee shop, or a quiet place that will allow you to focus. Switching up your study locations is important.
8. Sleep.
In order to function, you need to get a goodnight’s rest. Naps are great too.
9. Get rid of distractions.
When you’re studying, hide your phone. Out of sight, out of mind. Don’t watch TV or movies while studying. Don’t play your music too loud. If it's difficult to study with your friends, take some alone time to focus.
10. Take breaks.
It’s healthy to take breaks after studying for copious amounts of time. Online shop, read a book, hang out with friends, eat something, exercise, meditate, take a walk, treat yo' self.
11. Do practice tests.
You’ll get in the mindset of how the test may be. Look over finals from prior years or take practice tests online.
I hope you find these tips useful! Good luck on your finals!
