6 Ways To Make The New Year A Great One

People are constantly setting New Year's Resolutions a couple days before we ring in the New Year. Many people choose to go on a diet, cut out alcohol, or exercise daily. But do you really want to make a goal that you stick to for a month and then forget about all together? Here's six ways to make the new year a great one, without a resolution you'll forget about anyways.

1. Spend it with people you love

One way to make the year a great one is by making sure you spend it with the people you love. It's easy to get caught up in your 'resolutions' and the bustle of the new year. Make sure to keep time for the ones you love and the ones who made last year great. Without them, the year won't be as memorable.

2. Keep a positive attitude

As a child you were told, "You can be whatever you want to be". Have the mindset of a child this year as you think of all the things you want to accomplish. You can do whatever you put your mind to with a little confidence and a positive attitude.

3. Eat healthier

It's hard to accomplish a diet for the new year because it's easy to get discouraged with nasty food without any flavor. Diet isn't a necessity, just try to eat healthier. Healthy eating will give you more energy and make you feel better about your body and health. Don't focus on calories but instead focus on making sure you're eating all your food groups.

4. Sleep!!!

Sleep is oh, so important and we often neglect it due to our busy schedules. Try to start off the new year with a good sleep pattern, early to bed, early to rise. Eight hours is a good goal to make you feel more focused and energetic.

5. Make you time!

As it's necessary to make time to spend with others, it's necessary to make time for yourself. Go on a shopping spree, read a book, see that movie you've been wanting to watch, take a bath. It's important to have alone time and reflect on the day you've had. It's good to be okay with being alone so make sure you take time out of your day for you and only you.

6. Be yourself

Finally, make sure you're spending your year how you want to spend it. Don't do things just because others are doing them. You don't want to look back on your year and remember things that you didn't actually want to do. Accomplish what you want and make your own goals. You'll be grateful when you look back on your year and all you've completed.

As you can see, these are just small things that can make your new year a great one. Crazy resolutions that you'll never accomplish are not necessary. Just make sure you're doing what's best for yourself and the people around you and you'll be set for a great year!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
