Nearly everyone has had a day when they can't get out of bed. Not because it's difficult to get up in the morning because you're tired, but because it's difficult mentally. People have bad days, some bad days turn into bad nights, and even those bad nights can seep over into the new morning. The mornings when your mind can't grasp the idea of having to find a way to function, let alone actually doing it, are some of the most difficult, especially when you have a busy day ahead of you. Sometimes we need to take mental health days, we need a break and there's nothing wrong with taking one. Though even when the temptation to shut out the entire world and stay under the covers for the day, it's still important to be sure you're healing yourself so you can pick up where you left off. Here are a few small tips I've found to be extremely helpful when I'm having one of these days.
1. Take five minutes to slightly tidy up the room.
I always feel like when I'm in a cluttered room my mind is just as messy. Even taking just five minutes to slightly clean up the room a bit can make a huge difference in the way you may feel.
2. That being said, make the bed.
This is a must for me anytime I'm feeling a tad off. Even if you can't find yourself enough energy to clean up a little bit, having a nice, freshly made bed is an awesome feeling, and can make the room feel less messy in an instant, and make you less tempter to get back in. If you plan on staying in bed all day making the bed and lying on top with a separate blanket (so the bed is still put together) is also an amazing feeling in itself.
3. Take a hot shower.
Standing under hot, running water is by far one of my favorite ways to clear my mind. It's so relaxing and stepping out and feeling clean is a great way to feel better in an instant.
4. Put down the phone and open a book.
Getting sucked into social media all day everyday can definitely take its toll on one's mental health. Constantly obsessing over likes, shares, and views can cloud your mind so much and you may not even notice until you step away for a bit. Avoiding social media on a day when you need a mental break can really help heal you, and getting lost in a book is just the cherry on top.
5. Light your favorite candle and crack the blinds to let light into the room.
Lighting a candle and filling your room with one of your favorite scents can be one of the most relaxing feelings when you're feeling down. The only effort you have to put in is lighting it and then you can just sit back and relax. Letting in even the smallest amount of natural light can lift my spirits like almost nothing else can.
