It’s getting toward the end of the semester, and Spring is in the air. The flowers are blooming, the sun is shining, and things are heating up. And I don’t just mean the weather. Along with the end of the semester come papers and projects. There are many beautiful days that you want to spend outside instead of sitting at your desk writing an essay. It can be hard to muster the willpower necessary to start on big projects, and maintaining focus when you can look out the window isn’t easy either; however, balancing work and relaxation can be done with these four strategies.
1. Do reading or written assignments outside.
If you have assigned reading or minor written homework assignments, pack your bag and take your work outside. Find a picnic table or a bench somewhere around campus or lay out a blanket on the lawn. You can soak up the sun and be productive at the same time. Just make sure to pack everything you’ll need including, paper, pencils (and a sharpener) and something hard to write on.
2. Satisfy your desire to get outside during your regular downtime.
Instead of going back to your room between classes, hang out on the lawn or walk around campus. Take the long way back to your room as you walk home from classes or eat meals outside. My campus offers outdoor dining on balconies attached to the dining hall. I find the fresh air between classes rejuvenating, even if I don’t get to stay outside as long as I like. Small intervals of time outside help to break up the day and make being stuck inside for classes a little more bearable.
3. Walk instead of driving for short trips.
If you have your car on campus and you’re crunched for time, it is just easier to drive that mile into town for your grocery; however, if you are looking for an easy way to spend more time outside, consider walking instead. This is not only good for your health, but also for the environment. Allot a little extra time in your schedule to make the trip. Bring a backpack or sturdy reusable bags for hauling your goodies back to campus.
4. Plan ahead.
Check the weather forecast for the week. Try to concentrate your workload on rainy days. Work on larger projects in increments. Yes, this includes planning to do some work on the weekends, too. If you procrastinate there is no way you will be able to get outside and relax in the days leading up to your due date. Planning ahead is the best way to make sure you get a little free time each day. You can be more productive if you allow some time for breaks in your schedule. You will feel rejuvenated and re-energized when it is time to get back to work.
