Believe it or not, the 2015 NFL Season is half way over. Some teams have come up big and surprised experts opinions by being a contender. Some teams have played well, but maybe are missing just a player or two. Some teams are just plain bad and need to basically fire sale the team just to save their bank. No matter what you think, the NFL draft should be on the minds of several GM's.
While we can expect teams like the struggling Indianapolis Colts, or even the under-preforming Baltimore Ravens, they will more then likely be picking still outside the Top 10. Teams like the Chicago Bears and Jacksonville Jaguars however, will more then likely be picking one of the top recruits from the 2015 season.
So maybe just because it is Week nine, it is early to think of the 2016 NFL in Chicago, but who cares. Players such as Jaylon Smith and Joey Bosa are probably already thinking about how much more they have to do this season to hear their name called by Roger Goodell come April. Other players like Laremy Tunsil and Ronnie Stanley know they'll be top 10 picks so they will just play average if their teams fall off.
In the end, 31 players will hear their names called in Chicago, and will see their dreams come true. While it is early, here is my first second round mock draft for the 2016 season.
Keep in mind this is also where I think teams will be picking at the end of the season.
1. Detroit Lions- Robert Nkemdiche, DL, Ole Miss
There are only two options for the Lions at this moment, offensive line or defensive line. While Riley Reiff can be moved to right tackle after this season, it will be hard to find a future left tackle after the first round. Still, Nkemdiche is too good of a player to pass up on. With both the losses of Nick Fairley and N'Dmonukung Suh, adding meat to the defensive line is the best option to help fix Detroit's major issues.
2. Baltimore Ravens- Joey Bosa, DL, Ohio St.
Terrell Suggs is at the back end of his career and GM Ozzie Newsome needs to prepare for life after "Ball-so-Hard." Bosa is the top prospect in 2016, and will be a key addition to the front line of the Ravens. While the defense needs help in multiple places, the front 7 seven is the first need Baltimore should address.
3. Cleveland Browns- Ronnie Stanley, OT, Notre Dame
The rumors are true believe it or not, Joe Thomas and Alex Mack are headed out the door. With more than likely both of these linemen out, Stanley could replace Thomas to pair with Cameron Erving and Joe Bitonio for the franchise future. Yes, quarterback could be addressed, but let's be real...the Browns can't continue this QB carousel in the draft.
4. Tennessee Titans- Vernon Hargreaves III, CB, Florida
The Titans will look to find another Cortland Finnegan in this year's draft class to pair up with Jason McCourty. Hargreaves is great in coverage and has speed to make a huge play and run it back for a touchdown. With his arms and technique, Hargreaves will be a nice pair up on defense like Marcus Mariota is for the offense.
5. Jacksonville Jaguars- Laremy Tunsil, OT, Ole Miss
The Jags might have some real promise in the future with TJ Yeldon, Allen Hurns and Blake Bortles on offense. Luke Joeckel has been terrible at left tackle for the Jags, and is in a contract year. Finding protection for Bortles' blind side is a must need for the offense. Tunsil may not have played all of this season, but he is a huge upgrade from Joeckel.
6. San Fransisco 49er's- Jalen Ramsey, DB, Florida St.
The 49er's addressed the defense on the first round last year, but they need help in the secondary. Eric Reid is the only real threat for the 49er's backfield and Ramsey could upgrade them immensely. Ramsey is strong, fast and can cover from any position. A versatile DB is just what the 49er's need after this season.
7. San Diego Chargers- A'Shawn Robinson, DT, Alabama
The Chargers' run defense has been rough this season. While Corey Luiggett, Mati Te'o and Melvin Ingram have been key pieces to the defense, adding some bulk in the middle to stop up the middle runs is at least something the Chargers should consider. Robinson has been a key part of the Crimson Tide's defense over the past three years. He is a true defensive tackle who can fill the middle for the Chargers' struggling defense. While safety and cornerback are issues, they can upgrade in the second and third rounds.
8. Houston Texans, Paxton Lynch, QB, Memphis
It is looking more and more like Brian Hoyer is the future for the Texans' offense and Ryan Mallett is already out the door. The Texans don't need a superstar to run that offense, just a commanding play caller who doesn't make careless mistakes. Paxton Lynch is 6'7 and already has 18 touchdowns this season. He only has one interception and has over a 70 percent completion percentage. While Jaylon Smith might be a great replacement for Brian Cushing, if they decide to move on from him, Lynch could be a perfect fit for the Texans' offense.
9. Kansas City Chiefs- Taylor Decker, OT, Ohio St.
While Eric Fisher hasn't be great at left tackle, he certainly has
been better for the Chiefs' offensive line rather than Luke Joeckel has
for the Jags. The Chiefs can move the struggling Fisher to right tackle
and pick up Decker to protect Alex Smith's blind side. While Decker
isn't a top 10 player, his need for the Chiefs makes him one for now.
10. Chicago Bears- Jaylon Smith, LB, Notre Dame
While Jay Cutler still hasn't been great this season, the Bears still aren't ready to move on from him. The next big issue would be defense, and linebacker is the main issue. Shea McClellin has been a nice surprise in the middle for the Bears, but he is in a contract year. Even if he comes back to the Bears, Chicago could move on from Mason Foster and fix the run up the middle. Smith has been great for the Irish duo through the middle and in pass coverage. He would be a great fit in Fangio's defense, especially up the middle.
11. Dallas Cowboys- LaQuon Treadwell, WR, Ole Miss
Terrance Williams is a good number two receiver or even a slot, but he is not a number one guy. Dez Bryant can't be the only option for Tony Romo to throw to if he stays neatly. Treadwell is a big receiver who can add in the passing game. Along with Terrance Williams and Bryant, the three could be huge for the Cowboys offense.
12. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Jack Conklin, OT, Michigan State
The offensive line of Tampa Bay is slowly becoming better for Jameis Winston and the up coming Tampa Bay offense. Adding in Donavan Smith and Ali Marpet will be great for the future of the Bucs, but neither will address the blind side for Winston. Conklin is a former walk-on who has been big for the Spartans offensive line. He could easily take over Logan Mankins role after this season.
13. Washington Redskins- Kenny Clark, DT, UCLA
The Redskins picked up Terrance "Pot roast" Knighton this offseason, but he is only on a one-year contract. If they re-sign him, then they can address the secondary need. However if they don't finding a nose tackle to replace him, he would be a solid option. Clark is run stopper who can beat up on the offensive line to get to the runningback. Minus the linebacking core, the front line should be addressed early.
14. Buffalo Bills- Reggie Ragland, LB, Alabama
This might be a reach, but the two key issues for the Bills are offensive line and in the linebacking core. With the top four offensive lineman gone, Reggie Ragland looks like a great pickup for the Bills. A pure middle linebacker, Ragland has racked up 7.5 tackle for losses this season as well as several sacks. He is the type of player who would thrive in a Rex Ryan defense for years to come.
15. New Orleans Saints- Corey Coleman, WR, Baylor
Believe it or not, Marques Colston's career is coming to end very soon. He has lost a step or two over the years and will be 33 after this season. Corey Colman has size, speed and strength as well as can pretty much catch anything thrown his way. Pairing him with Drew Brees and Brandin Cooks for several years should help the offense, especially on third and long.
16. Miami Dolphins- Mackensie Alexander, CB, Clemson
Just adding defense is the best option for the Dolphins after they revamped their offense last season. Finding a replacement for Cameron Wake is smart, but pairing someone with Brett Grimes might be a better option. A shutdown press corner who can cover anyone in the ACC, finding a slot corner to cover the tight end/slot position would be big for the Dolphins and an upgrade from Zack Bowman.
17. Oakland Raiders- Myles Jack, LB, UCLA
The Raiders are turning into a legitimate team in the AFC under Jack Del Rio. Adding in an offensive lineman or wide receiver could be a huge upgrade, but Jack is too strong of a prospect to pass up on. Jack's raw style of play makes him a great run threat linebacker who can crash in the middle against the run. Pair him will Khalil Mack and Aldon Smith, Jack Del Rio has a linebacker core that could mimic with the 2009 USC Trojans.
18. St. Louis Rams- Tyler Boyd, WR, Pitt
While the Rams have tons of receivers, three are under 6'0. Adding in some height might be the best move for the Rams especially if they move on from Kenny Britt. Boyd is a great YAC receiver, and could be a solid possession receiver in the Rams for a long time. Add in the fact that he is 6'2, and he makes a great receiver for Nick Foles in the future along with the speed of Tavon Austin. The Rams almost selected DeVante Parker in 2015, now they must go with a wide out either first or second round.
19. Philadelphia Eagles- Tre'Davious White, CB, LSU
Byron Maxwell has one corner position locked up even though he has under performed this season. Eric Rowe is looking more like the replacement at free safety rather than cornerback. White could play the nickel, while Nolan Carroll takes care of the outside. Getting a corner makes the most sense for the Eagles when playing in a division with OBJ, Victor Cruz and Dez Bryant.
20. Seattle Seahawks- Leonard Floyd, OLB, Georgia
Bruce Irvin is in a contract year and if all the top offensive linemen are gone, they must address that need, since more than likely, he is gone. Floyd has been playing sluggish lately, but he still is first-round talent. His speed off the edge and ability to tackle makes him a solid fit for Pete Carroll.
21. Indianapolis Colts- Vadal Alexander, Guard, LSU
Line, line, line....that is the only thing the Colts need to address. The defensive line is rough, but they can get an edge player in the second round. The offensive line is abysmal, especially in the middle. After passing up on La'el Collins last year, due to his off-the-field issues, they must get a guard to protect Andrew Luck. The tackle position is decent, but Alexander could be a huge upgrade from Todd Herremans.
22. New York Jets- Germain Ifedi, OT/G, Texas A&M
He is not a first-round talent, but D'Brickeshaw Ferguson is coming close to the end of his career. Finding a replacement for him, so he could move to right tackle, might be the best option. The defense is sound, and if Devin Smith can't turn it around, the Jets could get a receiver in the second round. Ifedi has helped protect Kyle Allen's right side this season, and could play Right tackle for several years before moving to the left side. The Jets need to find a replacement for the future tackle, why wait until next year when they could address it now?
23. New York Giants- Scooby Wright III, EDGE, Arizona
The Giants need to add pass rush either on the line or in the linebacking corp. If JPP can prove he can comeback from his finger amputation, this design becomes a lot easier. Wright racked up 153 tackles last year and 14 sacks. No wonder he was the defensive player of the year last year, and an All-American. While his size could come into question, he fits a Steve Spagnuolo defense and will be a nice pair up with Landon Collins and DRC.
24. Pittsburgh Steelers- Kendall Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech
The Steelers have been known for years as a defensive type of team, but now they have switched to an offensive identity. They need to address the secondary since it seems like Jarvis Jones is finally getting it together. The secondary is still the worst part of the Steelers defense and they need to address it again this offseason. While Fuller was injured this season, he is still a solid press corner. Add in Senquez Golson, and maybe a safety in the second round, and this defense is slowly getting every piece it needs.
25. Minnesota Vikings- Jordan Jenkins, EDGE, Georgia
Safety is a need that the Vikings can address in the later rounds and offensive line is something they could pick up in free agency. Chad Greenway is in a contract year and he will be 33 after this year. Finding a replacement for the future might be a great option since there are a plethora of edge players. Jenkins is a solid pass rusher from the stand-up position, and could be a future there down back. The Vikings have added Anthony Barr and Eric Kendricks the past two seasons, time to make it a 3-peat at linebacker.
26. Denver Broncos- DeForest Bucker, DE, Oregon
The Broncos added Shane Ray to be DeMarcus Ware's replacement, but they still need a pass rush to complete the defense. Buckner is a huge talent...literally. At 6'7, Buckner is the prefect strong-side end to play next to Von Miller. Putting Miller, Ray and Buckner on the same defense is scary for Wade Phillips and Gary Kubiak to work with.
27. Atlanta Falcons- Emmanuel Ogbah, DE, Oklahoma State
The thing is, I think that Bruce Irvin will be in a Falcons uniform after this season. Adding him with Vic Beasley is a prime rush for the Falcons D. Adding in a true defensive end like Ogbah to replace O'Brian Schofield to get a few more sacks still is a big need for Dan Quinn. Ogbah has been a nightmare for Big 12 quarterbacks this season, and could become a day one starter for the Falcons with a solid spring training. Adding outside speed is key one for the Falcons this off season.
28. Arizona Cardinals- Shaquille Calhoun, EDGE, Michigan St.
The Cardinals haven't had a solid pass rusher since John Abraham left the team in 2014. Adding in a true defensive end like Calhoun to replace Abraham, to get a few more sacks while bringing in youth is a major need for Bruce Arians D. With his outside speed, Calhoun will be a great pickup to add pressure to quarterbacks for several years under new defensive coordinator, James Bettcher.
29. Green Bay Packers- Shaq Lawson, DE, Clemson
Dantoe Jones has been a major issue for the Packers off the field. Maybe moving on from him is the right thing to do for the team. Shaq Lawson has been the key defender for the Tigers this year, and could add some muscle to the front line. While adding a middle linebacker is another move they could make, the Packers need an enforcer and Lawson could be the best option.
30. Cincinnati Bengals- Jarran Reed, DL, Alabama
The Bengals found their replacement for Andre Smith and Andrew Whitworth in Jake Fisher, and Cedric Ogbuehi. While Reggie Nelson is in a contract year, Jalen Ramsey is the only safety prospect worth taking in the first round. Pairing a big defensive tackle like Jarran Reed next to All-Pro Geno Atkins for the next several years might be smart. The Bengals and Steelers will be the top two teams in the AFC North for the next few seasons. Reed can play both a three technique and a five technique and will be able to limit the running of Le'Veon Bell and DeAngelo Williams twice a year.
31. Carolina Panthers- Josh Doctson, WR, TCU
The Panthers look like the best team in the NFC this moment, but they are missing Kelvin Benjamin for sure. While Devin Funchess isn't terrible, the Panthers need another receiver to replace Philly Brown and Ted Ginn Jr., Josh Doctson is a solid receiver, and will pair nicely in Carolina with Cam Newton and Benjamin. The Panthers need to add another receiver to the team either through free agency, or the draft. With the offensive lineman gone, Doctson is the best option.
32. New England Patriots- No pick due Deflategate
