If you ask any of my friends, they would be quick to tell you that I am very much what a person might label to be an ‘old soul.’ I like old music, old fashioned clothes (not bonnets and dresses that come down to the floor, but you get the idea), and old ways of life, particularly in romance and dating. I get teased a lot for having such a nostalgic, but I honestly don’t care. I’m me, and if being me means to long for a poodle skirt, doo-wop records, and a handsome young man who owns and can drive a ’57 Chevy (and a leather jacket and a pompadour hairstyle wouldn’t hurt either), then I certainly have no objection. The 1950s is my most favorite decade, and here’s why:
Everyone could win a best-dressed award
Everyone was modest, clean-cut, yet adorable. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could all aspire to look like that today?
The best entertainment era ever
From Elvis Presley to Lucille Ball, with some lesser-known but just as significant singers and entertainers in between, Hollywood in the ‘50s was filled to the brim with real, actual TALENT- not just the latest news about the Kardashians.
Nice cars
Whether you’re a car nut, or you just know a pretty color when you see one, you have to admit that the 1950s had some pretty sweet rides. The 1957 Chevy, as pictured above in baby blue, is my personal favorite of them all.
Genuine love
Unlike in today’s society, where everyone feels like they have to live up to a certain standard before they can be accepted or even find love, life back in the ‘50s was much less stressful. You were loved for simply being you, and you weren’t ever pressured into feeling like you had to be someone that you weren’t. And that, I think, is the sweetest thing ever.
I wish every single day that I could’ve been around during the 1950s, just to see for myself what everything was like. My fantasies about this era may be completely false, but it’s still part of the vibes that I get when I think of the doo-wop decade. What can I say? I’m in love with the nifty fifties!
