Back at again with another unsolved case- this time a haunting case. *Que the creepy ghost music*
Lately, thanks to my new profound addiction to BuzzFeed Unsolved, reading up on mysterious places, unsolved cases, etc. have been intriguing to read. And I find myself wanting to talk or discuss everything I find with someone who is the same way. Which leads me to the next unsolved case I'll be discussing- Waverly Hills Sanatorium.
Located in Louisville, Kentucky, Waverly Hills Sanatorium sits on a hill in southern Jefferson County that had been designed to combat tuberculosis. Tuberculosis became know as the "white death" would claim entire families and sometimes entire towns. Louisville, KY happened to have one of the highest death rates for the disease in America.
Opened in 1926, Waverly became the most advanced tuberculosis sanatoriums in the country. While it's stated that many would survive their stay at the sanatorium, many still died there at the height of the epidemic.
Many of the treatments were unpleasant but the "last resort" treatment was gruesome of them all. Balloons would be surgically implanted in the lungs or muscles and ribs were removed from the chest to let in more oxygen. Few patients survived the procedure.
Most people who entered Waverly weren't leaving alive due to their being any known treatment at the time or dying due to the brutal treatments. They even had a body chute to dispose of the bodies because staff didn't want the patients to see what happens to them after they passed.
Known as one of the most haunted places in America, many have reported paranormal sightings and experiences firsthand themselves. People have reported eerie events happening in the death tunnel, which is honestly no surprise. People have seen mysterious shadows, footstep when no else is with them or around and the creak and groan of old cables no longer there.
Room 502 located on the fifth floor seems to be one of the more paranormal rooms throughout the place. Supposedly a pregnant, unmarried nurse hung herself inside the room while other says she jumped out the window for an unknown reason.
Then there's the legend of Timmy. Six or seven-year-old Timmy died during his stay at Waverly. But stories have it that if you bring a blue boll, Timmy might just end up playing with it if given the chance.
There have also been stories of visitors seeing ghosts of nurses, hearing "Get Out" in room 502, seeing shadows, doors closing on their own and a little girl on the third floor who people say she has a face but no eyes.
While you won't see me visiting anytime soon because I am a big scaredy cat, people are encouraged to visit and join a tour group to get the experience of the famous hauntings of Waverly Hills Sanatorium.
Whether it's haunted or not, you might have your own spooky encounter to share with the rest of the world if you dare set foot in the rundown hospital.
