"The L Word" is a phenomenal show about lesbians in Los Angeles and each time I finish the series, I mourn. This was the first show of its kind to portray lesbians in a society where back then, lesbian life was highly unrepresented. One of the biggest factors for the stigma is religion, and when we hear the words religion and homosexuality in the same sentence, immediately visuals of bible thumpers shunning the gay comes first. Now, my grandmother happens to be an Orthodox Jew and from a generation that knew basically nothing of homosexuality.
For that reason alone, I decided to watch "The L Word" with my bubbe, and these four realizations have become warm spots in my heart.
1. If your grandma hates Jenny like every other ‘L Word’ fan (except for me), then she is surprisingly hooked
Because think about it: You truly know you're into a show when you find a character that you absolutely hate.
2. Watching lesbian sex scenes with your grandma will only be awkward if you make it awkward
3. Being religious is not automatically equaled to homophobic
Because there are many religious people, like my grandma, who will respond by saying "we are all a creation," and that's just plain effing beautiful.
4. It is never too late for anyone of any generation to open their minds
And with that being said, surprises come in the strangest of ways. Shalom!
