Let me start by saying: I am a New England Patriots fan. So if you hate Tom Brady or the "Patriots Dynasty" or Bill Belichick or otherwise, bring on the criticism (Pats fans are exposed to such remarks from a young age).
More importantly, I'd watch the Super Bowl whether my team was playing or not. Even if your team isn't in it and you're only a casual fan, and even if you don't really follow football at all, it's a GREAT program to watch. Don't believe me? Here's why you should.
1. Dudes yelling what seems to be gibberish
Okay, it's not actually gibberish. But when the camera picks up when players call things out on the field, it can be pretty entertaining. I find it especially funny because they have to yell pretty loud for their spread-out team to hear it, so their voice often resembles that of a caveman.
2. For Trojans especially: LOS ANGELES IS IN THE SUPER BOWL
You know, that team that sometimes, kinda, like, borrows our Coliseum? The one whose logo is never quite washed off or painted completely over on the field? The one with the head coach who is just 33 years old, the youngest head coach in Super Bowl history? I hope you know I'm talking about the Los Angeles Rams. It's the second consecutive LA vs. Boston/New England matchup -- the last one being the LA Dodgers against the Boston Red Sox in the World Series. So come on Trojans, watch the Super Bowl and root for our city! (I'll still be cheering for the Pats though.)
3. Excuse to eat appetizers
To be completely honest, I like to make my own excuses to make and eat appetizers. Sometimes it's just an appetizer kind of day, you know? But the Super Bowl is effectively a federal holiday for appetizers. If you're at a Super Bowl party and there's no apps, there is something wrong. So bust out those pigs in blankets (or spinach artichoke dip, for your vegetarian friends) and enjoy while you watch the big game.
4. Funny and memorable commercials
Most people know about the Super Bowl commercial situation, but if you don't, here's the deal: Brands will spend lots of money on short ads during breaks from the game. They'll try to compete to be the 'best' commercial that year, generally by trying to create something that will make people laugh. They often come from beer companies, car companies, plus some others. Even if you don't care about the brands, there's a very good chance you'll see a dog in a commercial or two (according to PromoCodesForYou.com), so… that's plenty worth it for me, even if the ads aren't that funny.
5. Super Bowl Halftime Show
There was some controversy around this year's show (read this article if you need some background), so it's being discussed a little differently than other years. Regardless, it's a free ticket to a televised concert with Maroon 5, Travis Scott, and Big Boi. Usually the performers will go all out, with costumes, dancers, and more. If you ever saw a meme for 'Left Shark,' it came from Katy Perry's 2015 Super Bowl performance.
