Ask anyone how they might describe current popular television shows about young women and they would most likely use words like drama, gossip, secrets, and sex. From "Pretty Little Liars" to "Riverdale" and "Gossip Girl" all of these shows are being marketed to the younger female demographic and are about them, yet they are lacking something the current rising favorite show "The Bold Type" is not. And it is because of this that every young woman should stop what they're doing and watch "The Bold Type!"
"The Bold Type" is an American Comedy Series that takes place in New York City following the lives of three young and bold women; Jane, Sutton, and Kat as they navigate their young adult lives as working professionals for "Scarlet Magazine." The show which is inspired by the real-life editor of Cosmopolitan is making waves for its authentic and inspiring weekly episodes.
Not only does this show tackle current and tough subjects such as the "me too" movement, discrimination, sexuality, slut-shaming, and women in the industry but it also has a real authentic approach to women in friendships and how they truly navigate life. As mentioned before, the show revolves around Jane, Kat, and Sutton who are best friends and share the most real friendship seen on television in a while. Sure the group has their occasional indifferences but they all act out of love and illustrate real, supportive and female friendship.
Another amazing reason this show is so inspiring for young women everywhere is due to its building up of women as opposed to the tearing down. It seems too often that we only see the stereotypical "Gossip Girl" style dramatic show being marketed towards the female audience that showcases women as dramatic and catty bitches. Now while people may get away with saying these shows are showing women in powerful lead roles, they still don't do much for women as it just perpetuates the negative feminine stereotype. For example, one of the main characters Jacqueline Carlyle, who is the editor-in-chief of Scarlet Magazine and inspired by Joanna Coles the real-life editor-in-chief of Cosmo Magazine is portrayed as a strong boss woman who is powerful and in charge all while promoting a healthy, productive and collaborative work environment. The Devil Wears Prada evil boss stereotype has been left in the dust as Jacqueline constantly challenges her staff to strive to be better and to do better.
If you've read up to this point in the article, there is probably one of two thoughts flowing through your beautiful brain right now; "Wow, this show honestly sounds pretty cool, I need to watch it!" or "Uhm, is it really this good? And even more importantly, is it really worth watching?" My answer to both of these responses would be the same; "Yes! Just Do It! As you can see, just from this brief synopsis there is so much to get excited about!
We are in a pivotal point in time for women and it is in times like this that we must understand the importance of supporting anything that is making strides for women. But, supporting and watching "The Bold Type" is so much more than just tuning into a weekly show to help support your fellow woman. When we choose to support great shows like "The Bold Type," we are making a statement, we are changing the statistics, and we are challenging the way people in the industry stereotype women, causing them to not only rethink their approach on what sells but to rethink the way they think of a woman. And when we can do all that by just choosing to watch a show that is built upon authenticity and inspiring others, then we are doing something right.
