"Zootopia" is Disney's newest film. In my opinion, it is one of their best films. This film is both cute enough for children enjoy and real enough for adults to enjoy. "Zootopia" manages to combine child-friendly humor with real world problems that are being seen in many countries like the United States today. This article contains my thoughts on why "Zootopia" is one of the best Disney films to watch as an adult.
First, if you are a Disney fan like myself, then you will see it anyway. The animation is amazing and it all flows nicely. The characters are definitely well developed. It is simply everything that I expect in a Disney animated feature.
Second, this movie promotes positivity and confidence in one's own self. We follow a female bunny who wants to be a cop in a world that is quite literally too big for her. It is so energizing to see the filmmakers appreciate the little people. As a 5'2" 110 pound woman, I completely relate to this character. I understand what it is like for no one to believe in you because of your size or where you are from. It is comforting for me to see a film with a small protagonist who overcomes the odds.
Accompanying that point, this film also gives an interesting take on the police force. We see both the good side and the bad side of the police. However, our main protagonist reveals how important the police truly are. She begins with the taxing task of giving parking tickets for run-out meters. A lot of citizens fuss and complain about her just for doing her job. Once she finally gets a case, the chief tries everything to get her fired. It is totally messed up and it relates back to what I said about size. However, as the film progresses, it is revealed that the police are just trying to do the best thing for their citizens. The police do what they think will keep the community safe and I felt that was a very important subject to focus on.
This film also touches on discrimination to and from everyone. I mean, there is discrimination against size right out of the gate. They use words like "predator," "prey," and "savage" to point out some pretty obvious flaws that are seen in American society today. In the "zootopian" world, animals who are carnivores and others who are herbivores live together peacefully. The main conflict erupts when carnivorous animals start to go back to their natural, predatory habits. It is later revealed that a herbivore is framing these animals in order to stay in power. It is a slap in the face towards all of the racial slurs that occur in modern society and I thought that Disney produced these ideas perfectly.
All in all, I think that this is a great movie for both children and adults. It has enough cute nonsense to appeal to the younger audience and enough points about the flaws in society in order to appeal to adults. I think that "Zootopia" is a fantastic Disney film. Everyone who developed this film deserves a round of applause and I encourage anyone and everyone to go and see it.
