Recently I watched "Captain Marvel" with some friends. To be honest, I didn't think that I would initially like it because it felt very corny and similar to many of the other Marvel movies, but I wanted to give it a try because having a strong badass female character was a big plus in my book. At first, while watching the movie, I was pretty disappointed by the things Captain Marvel's teammates were saying to her because it felt very patronizing and misogynistic. But what I did like about it was that it immediately jumped into action and that throughout the whole movie, Captain Marvel acted on her own accord and didn't let anyone determine her actions. I loved that.
I felt a bit nervous at first because I thought she would get herself into trouble if she tried to do things alone. But that's what I liked about this movie, it primes you to think how impossible it seems for someone to do something alone and the shows how it can happen with a strong-willed woman.
I recommend this movie to anyone, not just girls. I personally liked it because I found it to be incredibly empowering for girls like me who usually just follow the rules. I think it's important to be aware of the possibility that you can do things on your own without listening to an authoritative figure. That's what a lot of other artists try to communicate in their works, including Beyonce and Pink.
I think it's awesome how society is becoming more receptive of the idea of a dominant, strong, and brave female taking on the roles that the traditional male counterparts plays. But there's still more work to be done, even in modern society - women are subjected to inferior roles in subtle ways, whether it be in our rhetoric or job salaries. In third world countries, it's even worse as women aren't even provided the basic necessities like rights and education like their male counterparts. That's why entertainment is so important because its platform is able to reach so many people.
