Okay, maybe not instead of watching "Stranger Things," but definitely afterward, when you're going through withdrawals.
While the world is raving about babysitter Steve and the adorable relationship between Mike and Eleven, there is another new Netflix show that deserves an equal amount of attention. This show is called "Big Mouth." It reveals all the terrible, explicit, but honest details about these animated characters going through puberty.
Why wallow in post-Stranger-Things depression when you could laugh at the expense of kids dealing with their own hormone monsters? Literally. There are literal hormone monsters in this show. At times they're gross and perverted, but they also make you remember some of the awful thoughts you had growing up as a preteen. It makes you wish there was a physical monster to blame all your embarrassing trauma on.
The cast is filled with your comedic favorites. The main character, Andrew, is played by John Mulaney. Other voices are provided by Nick Kroll, Maya Rudolph, Fred Armisen, Jordan Peele, Jessi Klein and Jenny Slate.
Watching "Big Mouth," I kept thinking " where the hell was this show when I was going through puberty?" But then I remembered that there's no way I would be allowed to watch this show because it's so explicit. However, it's the perfect show for adults to witness while remembering their own preteen selves and cry laughing at it.
What's simultaneously great (and sad) about "Big Mouth," is that it addresses issues that grown men and women still might not know about in their adult state today. For example, the fact that pushing on a girl's head down, in order to get a blowjob, is a form of sexual assault. The fact that yes, girls get horny just like men do. And most importantly, the one-hundred percent accurate anatomy of the vagina.
"Big Mouth" is more than just a comedy making fun of puberty. It covers issues on how puberty is handled today, and that every person develops at their own rate. So take a break from the "upside-down" and watch an episode of "Big Mouth." Or ten, because I assure you that once you start watching, you won't be able to stop.
