Why I'm "Wasting My Time" With Odyssey
Odyssey

Odyssey is one of the fastest growing online platforms in the world, and if that doesn’t give you a clue as to why I’m involved, let me enlighten you.

Odyssey allows thousands of people to share their story and be a voice in this world, with the possibility of changing it. It gives people an outlet to share their opinions and express their ideas in way that wasn’t being done before. It is ever-growing and ever-changing, and that is why I want to be on board.

I spend hours writing, editing, talking to people, coaching and being coached, weekly. Why am I wasting my time on something that I don’t get paid for?

I started writing for Odyssey a few months after my sister died. I needed an outlet to express how I was feeling and how people experiencing grief need people to react to them. That was my first article. After that, I found out that I could be part of a team and submit an article weekly. While working toward a journalism degree, I thought it would be good experience.

Before Odyssey, I didn’t want to write. I wanted to do public relations work. I liked to write, but I didn’t want to do it for a living. Now, I do. I want to write, and I want to edit. Odyssey has allowed me to discover that.

After a few months of writing, the previous editor-in-chief asked me if I wanted to lead the team and take over the EIC role. I have had leadership experience in the past and enjoy editing, so I figured, why not? I could never have realized the journey this experience would take me on.

Since starting, I have completely revamped the team, bringing nine new content creators on board and showcase my own and the team’s work weekly.

I write for Odyssey because I see a future in it. Not only am I being able to practice my writing and editing skills weekly, I get to practice my leadership skills and gain valuable and marketable experience creating and sharing content for the world to see. My team is impacting people around us, and Odyssey is making that possible.

Odyssey has possible internships and future job opportunities for me down the road. I believe in this organization and what they’re doing. I can see myself with them in the future. I believe in the managing editors I’ve worked with and all the Odyssey staff. They’re growing me as a person, and for that, I’m grateful.

To Odyssey, thank you. You have energized my passion, and this is why I spend my time bettering my team to better my community.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
