Washington, Pennsylvania has recently been called a lot of things – dangerous, drug-filled, unsafe and no place to raise your kids. As someone who has called Washington her hometown for 21 years, I can say that growing up in the small town was not as “traumatizing” as outsiders may think. Honestly, if I would not have grown up in “washpa” then I would not be the person that I am today. Here are some reasons why Washington isn’t as bad as everyone thinks...

1. It taught me not to be judgmental

In Washington, we have people of all social classes, races, gender, sexual orientation and religious beliefs; and we learn to live with and accept everyone. To us, it doesn’t matter where you’ve been or where you’re going – we just get to know you for where you are now. Washington, unlike other cities, doesn’t breed prejudice in their youth, and I love that. Overall, Washington is pretty great about people getting along.

2. It taught me that the “little, big town” is definitely the best

Unlike some of its neighbors, Washington is known as a larger or more dominant city in the area. Though I wouldn’t classify Washington as “big,” it definitely isn’t “little” either. I love that the city is small enough that my graduating class was less than 80, but it’s also large enough for people outside of the area to know where we are, and what businesses we have to offer. Also, it is large enough for it to sustain itself, but it’s less than one hour away from a pretty big city. I believe that the “little, big town” is the best option.

3. Hometown sports are the best – especially when you have a winning team

I don’t know about you, but I’ve always loved how Washington gets behind its sports teams. Whether its football, basketball or track the people of Washington support their teams with their whole hearts. I love this because it definitely adds to the morale of the city, and pumps our athletes more.

4. Shorty’s, Osso’s, Hillhouse and more!

Washington has some of the best treats around! Whether you’re headed uptown or to Wolfdale for the infamous Shorty’s hotdog, or you’re waiting on our hometown pizza, you know that you’re always in for something good. I love that everyone has their favorite, and are never afraid to chime in on the Osso’s vs. Hillhouse debate. Which side are you on?

I could name hundreds of reasons why Washington is great. However, I’m asking you to use your imagination and share in the comments why you think Washington isn’t as bad as everyone thinks….

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
