Why Everyone Should Spend a July Fourth in D.C.

Every July, Americans celebrate our country's birth. The festivities typically include barbeques, family trips to the beach or lake, and of course, fireworks. The Fourth of July is a summer favorite no matter how you spend it, but experiencing it in our nation's capital is unlike anything else. This should be an item put on everyone's bucket list, and if you can check it off, you certainly won't regret it. Here's some of the magic and excitement you'll see.

1. The parade

Brace yourself for a long, but fantastic day, all beginning with the National Independence Day Parade. Filled with marching bands, floats, balloons, and dignitaries, this parade will get you into the festive spirit and is up there with some of our country's most famous parades. Be sure to get there plenty early to mark your viewing spot along the route. The event kicks off on Constitution Avenue.

2. The historical celebrations

In D.C., one tradition that is almost as timeless as the fireworks is the reading of the Declaration of Independence. Given that this document is the reason behind the holiday itself, there surely has to be some celebration of it. Anyone can appreciate the reading, which takes place at the National Archives, but for history buffs, this is without a doubt a highlight of the day.

3. The American spirit

It's not out of the ordinary that you'll see red, white, and blue outfits no matter where you're spending the Fourth. But in D.C., the patriotic spirit is raised to another level. Apart from the hundreds of t-shirts displaying the stars and stripes, many wear flashy red, white and blue headpieces or flaunt face paint to top off the look.

4. The Smithsonians

While the number of Smithsonian museums set up along the National Mall are tourist favorites every day of the year, the history they hold is more special on the Fourth of July. The Museum of American History in particular is a must--you can check out the very first star spangled banner and other impressive artifacts that have become engrained in our culture.

5. A Capitol Fourth concert

Chances are you've watched this concert on TV to catch some popular acts perform before the country's premiere fireworks are set off. But why watch it through a TV screen when you can experience it right in front of you? Set on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol building, this concert is sure to please the eyes and ears. Be sure to get there a few hours before showtime, however, to get the best seats.

6. The fireworks

Did you really think this wouldn't be mentioned? Loud and lavish firework displays have become synonymous with the Fourth, but none are as grand or patriotic as the one that lights up the D.C. skyline. Lit off by the reflecting pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial, watching from any spot along the Mall will give you optimal views, though to experience them all you'll have to spend a few Independence Days in the capital. But with everything there is to see and do, you'll be left wanting to come back every year.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
