Introduction
The first period was scoreless as the Caps began their Stanley Cup winning game, but Collin Miller took two minutes in the box for interference. Vegas was ready for a comeback and definitely put up a fight for it, despite that early penalty. Jakub Vrana scored the first goal six and a half minutes into the second, then Vegas' Nate Schmidt responded with an even-strength goal nearly ten minutes in. The Caps beat Vegas 4-3.
Alex Ovechkin
Ovechkin scored his first Stanley Cup in his fourteen-year career with the Washington Capitals. Ovechkin also won the Conn Smythe Trophy for Most Valuable Player after eight years of being the team's captain, giving him the right to be the first to proudly lift the Stanley Cup, feeling the relief of finally getting the win that had evaded him for so long.
TJ Oshie's Emotional Dedication To Father
TJ Oshie's father Tim has been battling early-onset Alzheimer's for nearly six years. Since then, Oshie has participated in many events to fund research for a cure for Alzheimer's. The two have always been close (Tim was Oshie's youth hockey coach in Washington) and nothing had changed. Tim was there on Thursday night in the stands watching his son and his fellow teammates lift the Stanley Cup.
When asked about his father, Oshie found it hard to keep his composure, reasonably so, given everything his father has done in his life. "But I tell you what, he's here tonight. I don't know where he's at," Oshie looks among the crowd. "But this one will stick with him forever. You can guarantee that."
