By now everybody is familiar with #SadBenAffleck. And if you dug a little deeper, you figured out that Batman v Superman, arguably one of the biggest movies to come out this year, wasn't doing so well as far as reviews go.
Nevertheless, me and an estimated $424 million worth of people went to check it out this weekend. Comic book geeks, movie buffs and those simply curious about all the fuss showed out in droves to see what some were claiming to be one of the worst superhero movies in recent memory.
I don't know anything about either Batman or Superman aside from The Dark Knight movies and 2013's Man of Steel, so I couldn't really keep up with anything story-wise besides what they were explaining on screen. That being said, I'm a big fan of big explosions and cool fight scenes which is what got me to fork up the money for a ticket. And to be honest, I wasn't disappointed with that decision.
I can't lie--the movie is bad. A lot of stupid dialogue. A lot of dumb contrivances. A lot of stuff that doesn't follow common sense.
But I liked it.
As bad as the movie was from some of the more formal filmic aspects, it was pretty entertaining. Its two and a half hour runtime flew by to the point where I didn't check the clock at all, which is something I usually do at least once even in movies I think are really, really good. Batman fights Superman hard. Superman makes a lot of stuff blow up. There's a lot of pump-up music that gets you excited for what's going on. Overall it's just a fun movie.
I will say that it's tough to watch anyone other than Christian Bale be Batman--anyone who's kept up with The Dark Knight will have a hard time adjusting to the new version, which sort of makes the whole movie feel like a fan-made ripoff more than a serious action movie. It also doesn't help that a lot of choppy editing makes for some sloppy-looking scenes with a few cheap-looking effects thrown in. The movie apparently cost around a quarter of a billion dollars to make but it's tough to see where that money went.
It also doesn't help that some weird writing choices make what could have been a really cool story silly and senseless. This script had a lot of potential which got completely ruined. You can tell the filmmakers didn't do the best with what they had.
But none of that matters. We know none of it is real, who cares how it looks? It's no Dark Knight (which I consider not just a top superhero movie, but one of the best movies of all time), but it's a great way to kill a few hours. I wouldn't let #SadBenAffleck or any negative reviews keep anyone who's interested from seeing it. Don't expect a work of art--expect a movie where whole cities are getting blown up and two of the most recognizable characters are squaring off for the first time ever and you shouldn't be as disappointed as the majority of the critics were.
