First, if you do not know A$AP Rocky, he is a New York rapper who created the hit "Fashion Killa"...yeah, that guy! Now you know who he is! The rapper is under fire after his interview with TimeOut.com well, particularly his response to this question:
Q:Do you ever feel like you’re being forced to address these issues?
A: They're not forcing me to do s***. I'm just gonna stay black and die. Why, because I'm black? So every time something happens because I'm black I gotta stand up? What the f*** am I, Al Sharpton now? I'm A$AP Rocky. I did not sign up to be no political activist. I wanna talk about my mother****** lean, my best friend dying, the girls that come in and out of my life, the jiggy fashion that I wear, my new inspirations in drugs! I don't wanna talk about no f******* Ferguson and shit because I don't live over there! I live in f******* Soho and Beverly Hills. I can't relate. I'm in the studio; I'm in these fashion studios; I'm in these b****** drawers. I'm not doing anything outside of that. That's my life.
Now, I will go ahead and admit it I am fan of A$AP Rocky but do not think I am being biased in any way shape or form! I will use what I know from being a mass communications major and taking PR classes and knowledge of understanding (psychology minor) so that you can better understand him. He was not saying that he does not care about what is going on but he is saying that he is not able to vibe with the issues that are going on right now because he is not there. Is he wrong for being like that? Not every single rapper or black person is going to stand up with their fist up! It is just not going to happen and some people want to say "If we all stand up, change can happen." That may be true but not everyone is going to get involved. Not every slave left with Harriet. Not every black person followed Martin and Malcolm! So why expect every issue that comes up that everyone needs to have their fist up? A$AP Rocky does care but at the same time he is going to be blunt if he has no true statement on it which we have seen before. He is not going to sugar coat anything that he says. He said it himself "I did not sign up to be no political activist" so do not force him to be one. He may the type of person who truly wants to be in the area of what is going on to speak up on it. Let's face the facts, if we truly do not understand something we are not going to speak on it and this is one of those cases that just went public. This man is still grieving from the death of his friend A$AP Yams so maybe all of his emotion isn't there. Now, that's my take on the written interview! So after the interview he got a chance to sit down with The Breakfast Club where he fully explained himself a little bit more:
Now, are you still mad at him after this radio interview? He supports peace and unity, people! He was misquoted and also misspoke. The man is not political! I understand that if someone looks up to him they expect to take a stand but everyone needs to understand that, if you are going to hold one to that higher standard, hold all to that standard. I haven't seen too many rappers step forward and speak their minds but he was one caught off guard. He says within the interview “I feel like, why put me on a pedestal for that, especially when I’m not asking for that? You know what I’m saying? I wanna make music. I wanna inspire … at a time like this, I don’t have all the answers,” let that man inspire! A$AP Rocky and all African Americans are standing up for our rights everyday we wake up even if you advertise it or not! The man even said he felt bad for sounding like that.
I'll end with this A$AP Rocky is not a political activist and he does not promote everything that he does for the black community but understand the person who is being interviewed. Learning about all of this is what we learn in classes as mass communications majors. Words can be twisted any which way when it comes to something being written! So, while you are reading and forming your opinion about anyone, be willing to research them.
