A Warning Letter To My Off-Campus House
Danielle Lapierre

Hey! Well, you really are in for a great year. My friends and I are so excited to call you our home for this school year. We are a great group and have a lot of fun but I thought I would just write this to you just to warn you about some of the things that you might experience during our stay in your hallowed halls.

You’re gonna break from time to time.

We’re not morons and I’d like to think that we are a responsible group of young people but let’s be honest, we’re gonna push a wrong button or break the sink or the washing machine is going to overflow, so we just want to apologize in advance so you can prepare yourself. It might be a long year for you. So stay strong and try to keep yourself from breaking. We really want our security deposits back.

Get ready for a lot of screaming.

We don’t really fight a lot but we are a bit on the loud side. I’m sorry! We just really love each other. There is going to be a lot of long nights of us singing to songs we don’t know the lyrics to and a lot of screaming at boyfriends on the phone when they ignore our Snapchats. I mean can you blame us? He liked that horrible girl from class’s Instagram. You expect me to sit back and take this? We will also yell when one of us gets an A on an exam we studied for weeks in advance. We will scream when we see each other after a break or, let's be honest here, after a long day of class. Should I send a similar warning letter to our neighbors too?

There will be tears as well.

Come on. You knew this came with the territory. You are going to be housing multiple people at one of the most stressful times of our lives. We are starting to look for internships and jobs and our classes are the most in depth and as hard as they’ve ever been. You will hear wails from some of us about boys who do not matter and then you will hear a mix of the yelling/tears as we sit on the couch with a drink and a pint of Ben & Jerry’s. We will cry when we don’t get that A on the test we studied forever for. So there is going to be a roller coaster of emotion here at all times. But we, for the most part, are all good energy so don’t worry. Just wanted to let you know.

You will be the location of some of the best memories we have in our college careers.

This is where I get sappy, House. After so much time spent in dorms where I met these wonderful people, we can’t wait to have a little freedom without RAs looking over our shoulder. We don’t have to sneak in alcohol using backpacks anymore. We are older and wiser and we have been waiting to have this moment for a long time. You aren’t just going to be a place of broken sinks, screams and tears. Instead, you will be a place where we drink wine on our uncomfortable couch and talk about the memories of freshman year. You will be the place where we find out we got offered that job and that we got accepted to grad school. You are going to be the place where we throw our first real party and the first place we can call our own. Your rent may be too damn high but you’re home and I can’t wait to create so many memories with the people I love within your horribly colored walls.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
