WARNING: Beware of 1 hour 15 minute classes
The Huffington Post

As I currently sit in my second 1 hour 15 minute class of the day, I feel as though I am slowly but surely dying. I glance at the clock multiple times a minute and find everything possible to keep my bored mind busy. I think about all my assignments due for the week, what I have planned for the weekend, when I can squeeze in a nap today, and so on.

So, why am I taking these long classes you might ask? Good question. I am here to tell you to avoid these classes at all cost, they are not worth it.

Typically, classes that are 1 hour 15 minutes only meet two times a week, instead of three. That seems extremely tempting because who wouldn't rather have fewer classes per week? It also sounds like a short addition to the 50 minute alternative; like oh okay, it's not too much longer and you're already there for 50 minutes, why not stay a bit longer? But in actuality, those extra 25 minutes are what I expect death to feel like.

As an English major, I am forced to take these classes every semester. For some reason almost every English class is 1 hour 15 minutes. I'm not sure if it's because we need more time to develop in-depth discussions of novels or if English professors are just straight up evil, but either way I have had my fair share of these lengthy classes. So, coming from a professional 1 hour 15 minute class-taker I can tell you that sitting in one class for this long discussing the same topic and sitting in the same hard, uncomfortable chair is NOT worth it.

After sitting through two classes every Tuesday and Thursday of this length, I end my day with a pleasant little 50 minute class. 50 minute classes feel like a blessing after sitting through the two lengthy classes previously. It goes by quickly, you learn a perfect amount of knowledge without getting too bored, and your butt doesn't get numb from sitting in the same place for too long. While I have this 50 minute class more times a week, I constantly feel more excited to go to this class and dread it so much less than my other classes that are only two times a week.

Take it from me, while you are picking out your class schedule for next semester do not be fooled by the tricky aspect of less class meetings per week, you are still ending up in class for the same amount of time each week, only now you are sitting through long, drawn out lectures that could really be taught in 50 minutes but are excruciatingly lengthy to fit up the full class time. So, if I haven't convinced you already, ask around to your friends and see if any of them can give you positives on 1 hour 15 minute classes, and if so they are stronger people than I am. Good luck choosing classes for next semester, and let the odds be ever in your favor.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours.
