I Want To Be Engaged

Who Wouldn't?

I Want To Be Engaged
Abigail Hackett

I mean when you think about it, who doesn't want to be engaged? Life is passing us by, each minute it’s own kind of special and I don't want to waste it anymore, I want to be engaged. No, not physically engaged with a ring or a white dress (not yet anyway), but mentally engaged. With advancing technology, a growing number of social media platforms, and smartphones in every hand, it's easy to become disengaged from the people and events around us.

We go out to dinner and are more concerned with updating our status or who got more Instagram likes than we are on having a conversation with the people in our presence. We pride ourselves on our follower count and "follower ratios" are way too important. At concerts and sporting events, our cameras are on the subject more than our own eyes. We are living our lives through screens, and don't get me wrong, I’m just as guilty as anyone. I snapchat throughout the course of the day, Instagram more than I should, and continuously update my status (because I’m so sure everyone wants to decipher the song lyrics I tweeted or know what I’m doing every minute of the day). When you think about it, it's a little scary to think just how much technology and social media have taken over our lives. Sure, I think Facebook and Twitter are great ways to stay in touch with distant friends and family, but in excess, it hinders our daily lives more than we realize. The relationships and interactions that are meant to be personal are slowly becoming impersonal and distant. When I was little, playing outside was the only way to pass the time. Now, children are handed tablets and phones to stay entertained, its so odd to me.

I’ve decided that I want to be engaged. Not every moment of our lives has to be captured on camera or a platform. Instead of scrolling through my timelines at dinner, I want to know how someone's day went from their own mouth. I want to have meaningful conversations with friends and loved ones, rather than one-worded texts and emojis. I want to witness every second of a concert featuring my favorite band as opposed to watching it on a Snapchat story. Play the phone game at dinner and have conversations, sing and enjoy the beauty around you on road trips rather than bury your nose in Twitter. I want to live in the moment instead of focusing on electronically capturing it. I want to challenge myself and others to be 100% completely and totally engaged every now and then. I want to live in the moment because we only get so very few, each special in its own way and we can never get them back. These moments are all worth experiencing first-hand. Like I said, I want to be engaged.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
