Most of our lives we’ve been in the same place, with the same people, hearing the same kinds of messages. We went to the school, the church, the parks that our parents chose. We learned from them and from the people we were surrounded by for eighteen years.
It’s our home-base. Our stopping place. We come back when we need to. A sort of reality check, support system built into one that’s comforting and cozy.
But now, we can move.
One of the greatest things about Witt is the people you meet. They come from all around the country and the world, each carrying different backgrounds, ideas, and dreams. You learn their likes and dislikes, their skills, their insecurities, and their secret talents.
Find the people who have traveled to Europe. Talk to those who live in a different state or country than your own. Learn about their hometown, their family, what they love about their city, and why they left it.
Ask your friends what they daydream about during class. If they could do anything in the world, what would they do? Discover their greatest accomplishments or find out who they admire most in their lives.
Learn their music choices and who influenced these preferences. Listen when they talk about who they miss from home or when they tell you the same story over and over again.
I think we find ourselves in other people. Hidden parts of our personalities that we didn’t know were there appear when we are around others that inspire us. Our perspectives might flip and maybe one day we discover that our priorities are different. But, this doesn’t just happen overnight.
We have to go out and find the people who bring out the best in us. The ones who elevate us and teach us things beyond what we learn in school. The people who climb mountains and paint pictures with stars. I never want to stop finding people who fill my head with new thoughts and show me exactly what they get excited about.
I want to be where the people I can learn from are.
