The following poem was a homework assignment in my American Literature II class from a few weeks ago. We had read Whitman's work, A Song of Myself, and discussed it in depth. Our assignment was to write a short "song of ourselves" where we write long, unrhymed lines, like Whitman did, about ourselves. This is the first real poem I've ever written so please take it with a grain of salt. Here we go! :)
In me is a writer and editor who does not sleep.
A reader who won't move until the last page is through.
A student who puts everything into each assignment, quiz and test.
A friend who loves wholeheartedly and cheerfully.
Children bring me the greatest joy and delight through their infections smiles and laughter.
Cats and dogs flock to me because they know my heart and that I understand them and love them.
Determination and kindness are part of my character.
God is my savior in whom I place my trust.
