Who We Walked For During The Women's March

It's a movement, not a moment.

Who We Walked For During The Women's March

1. Those who came before us.

Not just the women, but the men who dedicated lifetimes to justice, equality, civil rights; we will walk for them. For my great great grandmothers that hoped to be able to vote one day. For my grandmothers that have so gracefully modernized and understand the importance of women in today's society. To my mother who serves the community no matter the race, age, and/or class of her patients.

We walk for them.

2. Those who will come after us.

For my little sister. My younger cousins. The kids I teach after school. My goddaughter. And those who haven't been born yet.

We walk for them to have a chance at every opportunity to achieve their dreams.... I think Hillary Clinton said something like that (LOL).

3. Those who have no expectations for their future.

For those who are hopeless, scared, and have given up on their future due to today's political, social, and/or economic climate. Whether they are in an inner city or working in Southern Texas hoping to make money for their families, we walk for them.

4. Those who feel the pressure to succeed.

For those who have impressive, expensive, educated, impactful futures ahead of them. Those students who have goals to make a difference but will be met with challenges. The girls who hope to find a career path that fulfills them, but also deserve an equal chance at healthcare an education in order to be able to focus on their road to success.

The girls and boys who deserve equal opportunity to match their sky high dreams; We walk for them.

Although one person, a relative, friend, or role model, may represent our motivation to walk, we walk for America as a whole. Not just for Hillary Clinton, but we walk for Donald Trump. We walk for the people we admire and the people we wish to affect. We walk for the preservation of the hearts and minds of Americans no matter what our population believes.

We walk because we believe that,

“The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.” - Martin Luther King Jr.

We believe the next four years can be positive. We are hopeful, and that's why we walk.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
