On Saturday, April 8, 2017, Georgia College's Public Relations group, Spectrum PR, held an event in Macon called Walk MS. This event was centered around raising money to fund research for finding a cure for Multiple Sclerosis.
Multiple Sclerosis is a neurological disease in the central nervous system that primarily affects a person's motor skills. Millions of people across the world battle daily with this disease, and the cause is still unknown. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society holds walks across the nation to help raise funds for research.
GC's Spectrum PR has worked closely with the Macon chapter to promote the walk within Macon and neighboring communities. Spectrum PR got volunteers from the Georgia College Honors Program to help with the event and raise donations, and together the two teams raised over $1,000.
On Saturday morning, volunteers arrived early to set up for the walk. The walk was held at GEICO's Campus in Macon, and over 100 walkers participated. Many people wore tags on their shirts to represent who they were walking for. Additionally, walkers who have MS wore special green shirts to represent the disease and demonstrate that they are striving to beat the disease. Walkers completed 3 laps that amounted up to approximately 3 miles. Volunteers cheered on the walkers with their voices and orange cowbells.
The event was an overall success. Altogether, the Macon chapter has raised almost $15,000 in donations among the 12 registered teams. However, there is still more to do in order to help find a cure for MS.
