I have been a huge fan of Walk the Moon for almost five years now, and my first real experience with the band was stumbling across their set at a festival in St. Louis. Before that, I had heard "Anna Sun" and was pretty ambivalent to it (I still am not sure whether I think this song is worthy of being what they always close their encores out with, but there's also nothing wrong with finishing with their first really big song), but their set absolutely blew me away. They even covered an old Talking Heads song, which is the surest way directly to my heart.
From the beginning, my relationship with Walk the Moon has always been defined by their live shows. After seeing them for the fourth time this past week (although the first time I have ever seen them not at a festival and at an indoor venue) I can confidently say that, though their sound is changing, their shows are just as dynamic and fun as ever. Not every band can bring the same level of energy to a headlining show compared to a festival environment, but Walk the Moon is able to bridge that gap.
I recently crapped on Walk the Moon's third album for being a bit lackluster, and I mostly stand by that stance. It's not as listenable as their previous work, although there are a few catchy songs on the record. But their latest tour includes a good mix of songs from all their albums, and they arranged their setlist in a pretty good rotation between albums and in a way that effectively ramped things up. They pretty much played all my favorites from all their records. At the end of the night, I couldn't really think of a song I wish they had played.
So despite not really loving What If Nothing, I am still solidly a Walk the Moon fan. If you have the chance to see them live, I would highly recommend it, whether at a festival or on a headlining tour.
