An Open Letter To Society About The World We're Creating

We need a change in mind, heart, and work ethic.

Dear Members of Society,

The world that we live in will never be the same and it's because of all the values, beliefs, and practices that have consumed our daily lives.

For those of you that have lost contact with the world, here's the problem: we are in deep doo-doo. For decades now, our world has continued to fall from one of the greatest, to near the bottom of the totem poll. Our culture has gone from hardnosed and hardworking to soft as a baby's bottom and it's only going to get worse until something happens. Don't get me wrong, I have fallen into the trap multiple times, but now it's time for me to take a stand and so should you.

For that reason, I've come up with three things that needs to change, in order for the world to be turned around.

1. The Work vs. Want Relationship

Individuals have grown up in a society that like to use the word "want". Want signifies that you are interested in something and that you would like to have it. After that, what does that individual do? They go ask mommy and daddy, which is by far the wrong answer. Yes, I understand that there are many of you out there that have worked hard, and I appreciate that. However, there are still many out there that have never busted a sweat for anything in their life. There has to be a relationship with the words "want" and "work". In order to succeed in REAL life, you have to be willing to work hard to get what you want.

2. Rewards Don't Follow Everything, Expectations Have To Be Held

The problem with so many people is that there is an expected reward for completing a simple task. Completing simple tasks are your duty as a human and you should not expect to be showered with glory for every little thing you do. Taking out the trash when it's full, helping your parents out, finding a job, or anything else that is done on a regular basis are all the things that are expected of you. Expectations are different in society, believe it or not. You have a particular role to abide by and with that come expectations. There isn't glory unless you earn it. Earn them by doing what is required of you and then talk.

3. Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable

Comfort zones are done away with when you get into the real world. In order for you to accomplish what you "want", you have to be willing to be in a different setting. There's no calling your parents to get them to help you, it's all on your own. If you want it bad enough, you will work through the beginning stages to be okay with your situation. What was comfortable 10 years ago to us isn't comfortable to us now. Times change, settings change and so will you in order for you to succeed.

These three things are just a few of the ideas that have to change in order for our world to change. Children are always told to strive for their dreams but are we helping them by teaching them the ways society tells us to? This isn't directed at any particular age group. It's directed to everyone because we all play a big role in changing the future. Plan for success and don't set yourself up for failure. Change isn't a bad thing, especially when you see the results that are needed to make an impact.

God Bless

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
