This is it folks. It is finally September. Even though for many people September marks the official end of summer, there is still plenty to look forward to this time of year. Personally, Autumn is my favorite time of the year. Mostly because of the neutral temperatures, but also because I love Thanksgiving and Halloween. But there are always people who are rushing this season along to get to the best parts.
September 1st has somehow become the official unofficial acceptable time to start selling pumpkin flavored anything. Yes, pumpkin is the signature flavor of the fall, but it is still 90 degrees out. No one wants a hot pumpkin spice latte yet. We as a society, have somehow incorporated this absurd behavior into our yearly routine and it really needs to go. For us in the northern hemisphere, in technical terms, Autumn does not start until the fall equinox on September 22. That means that only one week in September is in the fall. The majority of the month is still the summer. So why has September 1st become a socially acceptable date to start doing all of your favorite fall activities?
I can not even begin to count the amount of people I have seen trying to wear fall-esque clothing in the blazing heat just because it is September. No, put that flannel away and put your beanies down. A change in the month does not signify a change in season. I understand you are excited to wear all of your new and fashionable autumn apparel but now is not the time. Your chance will come soon. Wear all your summer clothes you spent all your money on one last time.
I think, the worse thing that comes in September are premature Halloween decorations. You literally have two months till Halloween. Slow your roll, dude. No one will be scared of your skeleton and spiderweb after all that time. Pretty much everywhere in the country it will still be warm enough to go in the pool for at least a few more weeks. Nothing kills a pool party like a scarecrow staring at you while you are swimming.
Autumn is a great and exciting time of year, one that is not going anywhere. In this day and age, people are terribly impatient. Fall will come, summer will end. Everyone will celebrate Halloween and Thanksgiving and go to football games drinking pumpkin spice lattes. But enjoy the time you have now. Summer is fleeting, life itself is fleeting. Don't miss out on the fun now because you are too busy looking forward to something that will come later. Be patient.
