Behind Tri Delta: More Than Just Three Letters

A few days ago, I had a freshman friend of mine ask me “What’s the point of Greek Life?” That's the same exact question I had freshman year of college. I had to take a few minutes to answer, but I believe my answer will resonate with many who’ve experienced the perpetual bond, and eternal friendship brought by Greek Life.

Before I went through Rush, I seriously consider transferring. It wasn’t that I didn’t have an amazing group of friends, or didn’t enjoy my classes and social life… something just didn’t feel right. I would constantly look at my friends from high school, see how much they loved the new school they called home, and would wonder why I didn’t feel that kind of love for Wake Forest. It finally became clear: I loved the idea of Wake Forest much more than I loved the place itself.

Second semester rolls around, I found myself sitting down in Tri Delta Pref. Night with a senior who loved me and will be someone I forever look up to. I wasn’t sure about the whole rush process until that very moment. I looked around, seeing many girls I already knew and loved, and couldn’t help but begin to tear up. Why? Because I realized in that moment, that I truly can love Wake Forest. And here’s why:

I could never love Wake for the place it is. Because that's just it: It's only a place. I now can say that I love Wake Forest because of the people who make Wake Forest the wonderful place, and second home, that it is. And not just the people, but my sisters.

Here are a few of the many Deltas that have made Wake Forest a second home to me, with an incredible second family. They’ve impacted our campus and community in so many different ways. I am forever thankful and immensely proud to call them sisters.

Caroline Keller

Most important to her on campus: Caroline, a junior from Jacksonville, Florida is passionate for an incredible organization called HOPE. HOPE is a volunteer program with special needs children in Winston-Salem. Caroline is also involved in Project Launch, Student Advising, and she is an Ambassador in Admissions.

Life Motto: Hakuna Matata: No worries.

Why she loves Tri Delta: “All my beautiful, compassionate, involved, fun-loving, diverse, hilarious, and supportive sisters! These girls are who I look up to, and I'm so blessed to have my lineage that makes me a better person. I couldn't ask for more wonderful people to share my college years with!”

Devin Williams

Most important to her on campus: Devin, a senior from Ashburn, Virginia, is one of the sweetest girls you will ever meet, with an absolute heart of gold. Devin’s most important extracurricular is giving tours for Wake Forest. As an Ambassador in Admissions, Devin gets to share her love for Wake with prospective students, one of her favorite things to do.

Life Motto: She believed she could, so she did.

Why she loves Tri Delta: “I love Tri Delt because the love and support of my Sisters through all the ups and downs of life is second to none! Couldn't get along without them.”

Katie Dickens

Most important to her on campus: Katie, a sophomore from Raleigh, North Carolina, is an absolute fashionista with the biggest heart around. Katie is currently helping to manage the PR for Love Your Melon at Wake Forest, which is a retail company with a goal to give a hat to every child in America battling cancer. She also is on the exec team for WFU Style, a lifestyle and fashion blog run by Wake students.

Life Motto: Life is a two-way street.

Why she loves Tri Delta: “I found my lifelong friends in Tri Delt second semester freshman year. These girls have your back no matter what, and the love and acceptance here is truly unlike anywhere else.”

Morgan Yi

Most important to her on campus: Morgan, a senior from Seoul, South Korea, is involved in Momentum Dance Crew. Momentum is like a second family on campus for many members, including Morgan.

Life Motto: "My pen’s better, you don’t write, trendsetter, you clone-like,” Kayne West.

Why she loves Tri Delta: “I love Tri Delta because the girls give me the confidence to be myself.”

Anderson Estes

Most important to her on campus: Anderson, a sophomore from Knoxville, TN, is one of the most giving girls I know. Anderson has a heart for everyone she meets. This was evidently seen when she started an international small group with a group of Chinese friends from her hall last year.

Life Motto: You’ll never grow unless you’re willing to be stretched.

Why she loves Tri Delta: “I love Tri Delt because through it I've met high quality people both my age and older who are here for me in the good times and bad. They've been friends who I can be my true goofy self around. I couldn't imagine my life now without these best friends!”

Kelly Guin

Most important to her on campus: Kelly, a senior from Fairfax, Virginia, is an incredible dancer, amazing friend, and a passionate leader. Last year, Kelly won $5,000 through the Do Something Challenge from Nancy Lublin to fund her project for positive social change. This semester she is the executive director. She believes it is truly inspiring to hear other students who are passionate about making a change at Wake, our community, and beyond. Kelly is also involved in Momentum Dance Crew, who she sees as one of her second families here at Wake.

Life Motto: This too shall pass.

Why she loves Tri Delta: “My sisters are the best friends I could never have asked for because I couldn't have imagined people that would mean so much to me. My lineage is my family and the amount of support and love I have received is unexplainable. They are my inspiration, my role models, my biggest cheerleaders, my future bridesmaids, my best friends.”

Lauren Chuang

Most important to her on campus: Lauren, a sophomore from Leawood, Kansas, is passionate about the world of dance. Lauren is involved in the Wake Forest Dance Company, as well as being the Winston-Salem Community Ballet Assistant Director. Lauren is truly talented in whatever she does.

Life Motto: "Spend a little more time trying to make something of yourself and a little less time trying to impress people" - Breakfast Club

Why she loves Tri Delta: “Joining Tri Delta gave me a home and sense of belonging at Wake Forest. It redefined what a friendship is and should be. Tri Delta gave me the confidence to be who I am and to embrace that. I have never been more proud to be apart of a group of girls more genuine, kind-hearted, and quirky as these Deltas.”

Sarah Vianey

Most important to her on campus: Sarah, a senior from Birmingham, Alabama, is an incredible friend and a passionate philanthropist. Sarah has been involved in Reformed University Fellowship (RUF) since her freshman year, and it has been one of the most meaningful aspects of her time at Wake Forest. She is thankful for the people in RUF that encourage her in her faith and challenge her to live boldly.

Life motto: Consider it joy!

Why she loves Tri Delta: “I love Tri Delt because of the incredible people I have met through it. Because of Tri Delt, I have made some of my best friends at Wake who I most likely would not have met otherwise. I am so proud to be part of an organization whose members have such a wide variety of passions-- I have learned so much from each of these awesome women.

Jessie Luttrell

Most important to her on campus: Jessie, a sophomore from Princeton, New Jersey, is a lover of all things fashion, as well as a friend you can’t live without. Jessie is involved in both Her Campus and WFU Style. Jessie is also on the committee for Project Pumpkin, which she says was one of the most successful and rewarding events she has been apart of.

Life Motto: You can never be overdressed or overeducated. – Oscar Wilde

Why she loves Tri Delta: “These girls are my best friends, my support system and my inspiration. I have never been apart of an organization that was so supportive and so welcoming and loving. Joining Tri Delt will be one of the dearest memories I have from my years at Wake. Each and every single girl brings something so unique and different to the sorority and somehow it all magically blends together into a perfect sisterhood!”

Carrie Nye

Most important to her on campus: Carrie, a junior from Fairfax, Virginia, leads those around her with a humble and giving heart. Carrie is involved in SBAC (student budget advisory committee) where she works with the student body treasurer to distribute and monitor the spending of $500,000 of student government funds that go toward all the chartered organizations on campus so that they can host events and travel. She also has been an RA for freshman, which she loved and found incredible rewarding.

Life Motto: Love more, worry less.

Why she loves Tri Delta: “It is such an amazing group of girls, and I truly feel like I found a perfect fit with the organization. It is an inclusive environment and it gave me a great opportunity to meet a great group of girls that I am proud to call my friends and sisters. And I've been lucky enough to be chosen as a leader in the organization for two years now!”

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
