Have you ever heard of something that someone got away with and it absolutely shocks you to your core? I heard something like that today and I can not get myself to get over it. I'm not here to reveal names and call disgraces upon strangers, but I am here to question, and possibly yell, about why this horrible person got away with what they did.
Many women and men were outraged when Brock Turner got off with six weeks jail time for raping a woman who was too drunk to even make it home that night let alone give consent to her pursuer. Proper justice was not served for the sake of that young woman who lost a piece of herself that night, and complete punishment was not delivered to the man, and may I mention college athlete, who felt that he was right to take advantage of an innocent and defenseless woman. Larger punishments have been given to people who shoplift or get in a bar fight.
To hear and see that a human being can take someone else's life and just absolutely ruin it just shocks me to my core. However, the fact that they can get away with such acts causes me to be consumed by indescribable rage. The injustice that was done to the too young Trayvon Martin. People go days, or even years, without ever properly being punished for the crimes they have committed, and why? In the case of Brock Turner, we gave him the benefit of the doubt because he is a white male athlete. Let me tell you something, just because a person has the entire world in their hands, or holds the entire world in their future, does not mean that it is okay for them to be let off of the hook for thinking that it is okay to get away with their crimes.
Our voices shouting for injustice and freedom were stifled by the judge's slam of the gavel. Our voices were quieted by the police officer's lack of caring. When our fellow Americans have been done wrong, nothing happens, and we lose our voices shouting through all of the other noise trying to be heard. Our juries and our judges, and even the people of America are convinced that rape, murder with a plea of insanity, abuse, and treason are things that are okay to do in this world. We wonder why our soil is so stained with the blood, sweat, and tears of our people, yet we allow people to do things that make us bleed or cry and the innocent sweats over them for weeks.
So I am waiting. Waiting for justice. I am waiting for our judicial system and our courts to properly persecute people and give them the punishment that they deserve for ruining someone else's life. I am waiting for justice to be given to those who deserve it.
