I love to plan. I have a planner with my whole schedule. I have to-do lists everywhere and I write things down about a billion times. So when something that’s not in my schedule comes up how do I cope with it? How do I work with it? It’s been a struggle and sometimes these spontaneous things are good, but it’s still hard to cope and move your schedule around.
I recently accepted a full-time manager position at a retail store. I applied because why not, but when it came down to it, I didn’t think I would get it. Here I am a full-time student accepting a full-time job. You may be wondering now why I took this or how will she handle such a heavy work load. But I know that this will benefit my future career; that I’ll learn so much and develop skills I would not have gotten if I didn’t accept the job.
I’m not going to lie to you I’m terrified. I keep thinking I’m not ready and I’ve taken on too much. But I’m here to tell you if you doubt yourself, like me, and think I’m not ready for this, maybe in the future I will be. However, when are we ever ready for anything? We weren’t ready to go to high school. We weren’t ready to drive. We weren’t ready to grow up and be an adult. So why doubt yourself now when you have the opportunity? Why wait for this idea that you’ll be “ready”? How do we even measure this idea of being ready? Maybe you think “when I’m 22 I'll be ready for this” or “when I’m in better shape I'll be ready for this”. But why do we do this? Why do we measure being ready for things we want to do? I want to be a manager and I want to learn so why do I think I’m not ready?
I recently came across a quote on Pinterest by Amy Poehler that sums this idea of being ready up.
“Great people do things before they’re ready. They do things before they know they can do it. Doing what you’re afraid of, getting out of your comfort zone, taking risks like that- that is what life is. You might be really good. You might find out something about yourself that’s really special and if you’re not good, who cares? You tried something. Now you know something about yourself.”
So what are you waiting for? Go do whatever you love to do, ready or not.
