I Waited to Watch 'Harry Potter' And I'm Glad I Did

I know it's a cliché but I'm glad I didn't follow the fad.

I Waited to Watch 'Harry Potter' And I'm Glad I Did

It's been seven years since the last "Harry Potter" movie came out and I just recently started watching them. By just recently, I mean that I just started watching them this week. Why? Because I never understood the big deal about these trends: "Harry Potter", "Twilight", etc. I have always been the person to get annoyed with anyone who would obsess over shows. Because what the heck is the point?

Anyway, my boyfriend and his family completely love these movies. They love them to the point that they have all the movies, books, merchandise—the whole nine yards. Still, I never wanted to watch it because "Harry Potter" is still a popular series. Even though his whole family has been trying and trying to get me to watch, I just haven't watched them. My whole work-family has been in my ears, telling me to watch them, too, but still, I stood strong. I wasn't going to watch them because that's just how I am.

Yet, here I am, binge-watching them all because I am house-sitting for my boyfriend's family and they are cutting our hours at work. And to my surprise, I don't hate these movies. They are actually really good and I honestly think that I am admiring them more now that I am older. I feel like I can relate to some of the awkwardness of asking someone to a dance ("Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire"). I see the true honor of the friendship between Harry, Ron, and Hermione. I have had professors who remind me of the ones in the movies.

I like to think that my attention span is a little bit better than it was when I was younger (and the movies were first coming out). I just think that a lot of times, when a movie series first comes out, everyone over-hypes it all. Nobody can truly admire it as much as they possibly could. I think that is also why I enjoy watching B-rated movies with no-name actors and then getting my friends hooked on them. There isn't too much hype around them, which makes each one a rare gem. I really think that is why it took me until the third "Twilight" movie came out to even read the books and for all the "Harry Potter" movies to be released before I even decided to sit down and watch them.

Overall, I think that I know what's up when I wait until the fad and hype of movies, books, etc. are gone. I can watch everything in peace without feeling pressured to think a certain way or without the fear that what I say will spoil it for someone else.

So I will continue waiting years to watch shows and movies. Change my mind.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
