Election season is finally upon us to cap off the wonderful year that has been 2016, and I'd be lying if I said that not voting this year hasn't crossed my mind.
I had just turned 18 when it came time to register to vote in 2012, but since I didn't really have any solid opinions on the issues being discussed in that election, I didn't register; I didn't feel right voting about things that I wasn't well-educated on.
Now, in the age of social media and the internet, I could tell you about all the prejudiced things Trump has said, or about all the instances of Clinton lying about her past. I could show you anti-Trump propaganda being broken down and shown to be taken out of context and all of the ways people have justified Clinton's actions or simply used the fact that she's actually a half-decent person to support their reasoning for voting for her. However, as far as policies that will dictate how my country is going to be run for the next four years, I couldn't say that I feel any more informed or opinionated on any issue than I did in 2012.
So far, the only real advice that I've received from anyone is this phrase: "You have to pick the lesser of two evils here!"
So you're telling me that instead of picking the best option - the person who lines up the most with my beliefs - I'm just supposed to make sure I don't pick the worse option? Clinton lies about her past, Trump is grossing me out more and more by the day, and I'm supposed to "pick the lesser of the two evils?"
I waited 22 years to finally vote for this?
While there are certainly many other examples of scandals shaking up presidential races in the past, I feel as though no previous election has had candidates with so many skeletons in their closets as Trump and Clinton do. It's very difficult to convince myself to vote for any candidate - Clinton, Trump or third party - when I don't think I could stand behind my vote for any of them.
I don't think voting for any one candidate will help me to sleep any better the night of November 8th.
America, the land of options and large portions: I appreciate the large portions of crazy you've presented me this election year, but I wish I had a better selection to choose from.
