Vows To My Soul Sister

My soul saw you and it kind of went, "Oh, there you are. I've been looking for you."

Vows To My Soul Sister
Cassidie Smith

Heredity didn't make us sisters; that's a choice we made on our own. Never did I think I would meet someone who paralleled me so closely, but here you are. And these are my vows to you.

I vow to always be honest with you, even if it hurts.

"That shirt is unflattering."

"Your relationship isn't working out."

"You haven't been exercising."

"Don't get that tattoo."

It's only because I am sometimes more aware of your potential than you are and know that you deserve and are capable of the best. I will always do everything in my power to help you reach that potential and to never hold back when you ask for advice. Know that if you ask for my opinion, I will never lie and I will never withhold because I believe in you.

I vow to support you, no matter what. We have already been through hell and back, and I'll be damned if I let you go through this life without a sidekick. If we end up on different continents, if life gets in the way and we forget to talk for weeks on end, if everyone else bails, then know that I have got your back. I will always be on the other end of the phone, ready to talk it out.

I vow to always make sure you maintain a sense of adventure. The world is vast and full of experiences to be had. I will make sure you see and experience as much of it as humanly possible and I will be right there at your side. Even if we are apart, I hope the adventurous spirit of our friendship drives you to take more chances; take the long way, hike that trail, make an impromptu road trip, live it all.

I vow to be your reminder. Reminder that you're good enough, that you have nothing to apologize for in being yourself. To not let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. That when you're in a dark headspace, you need to lose yourself in nature and fresh air to find your happiness once more. I will remind you of where you've been and how much you have overcome. Remind you that you have been through worse and you can endure whatever this life throws at you.

I vow to always make sure your life is full of laughter. If there's one thing we're good at, it's cheering each other up. I promise to be your personal comedian when you need a smile and to always maintain our special sense of humor. I promise to not stop until I see a smile on your face when I know you need it the most.

These are my vows to you, my soul sister.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
