Now that Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are the presumptive presidential nominees, the next big decision we have to make is who we are going to vote for to be the next president. This moment, which feels like we've been waiting for forever, has left many people with mixed feelings. As a supporter of Bernie Sanders I'm disappointed that he is not the nominee. However, I'm also aware that he was always the underdog and it was unlikely that he would win. Now that it's clear that he won't be the nominee, I am voting for Hillary Clinton.
Since Clinton was announced as the presumptive nominee I've seen many people, typically around my age, say that rather than voting for Clinton, they are not voting, voting third-party or voting for Donald Trump. I understand the sentiment behind saying these things. Hillary Clinton is not my first choice and she is far from being the perfect candidate, but no candidate is perfect and sometimes you need to sacrifice for the greater good (and yes, I am aware of how cliche that sounds).
As a New Yorker I am used to hearing, "It's a solid blue state so your vote doesn't matter anyways." So it shouldn't matter to me who I vote for, but as we've been seeing this election is not like ones before it. A candidate like Donald Trump, who says the things he does, shouldn't have made it this far, yet here we are facing the prospect of a Trump presidency. Not voting for Hillary means a greater chance that Trump will become president and in my opinion that's dangerous.
Being #Bernieorbust means dealing with the possibility that things will go "bust." A possibility that very few of us are in a position to deal with. I am voting for Hillary Clinton because the benefits outweigh the costs. And because a Trump presidency will be dangerous for many people and not everyone can just move to Canada.
